How to remove the gas tank from Tecumseh TVM220-157402C engine? (10.5 hp on swisher pull mower) Something is in the tank blocking fuel, it runs for verying lengths of time then stops, restarts fine. It may run for a while then stop, but when it gets to a short duration of stops and restart I stop using it. I know that the inside of the gas cap dropped inside the tank, but I think there may be something else in the tank also. I need to remove tank to turn upside down and shake things out. The two bolts on top come off nice but there appears to be something underneath that is not easy to see. I this something I can get to or do I have to remove the blower housing? Thank you, Dave

SOURCE: Lawn Mower will not stay running then will not restart

I think we all understand the frustation penaone.
I noticed u didn't clean the fuel tank, water, dirt, and rust in it can give u problems. But u need to clean the lines and carb. again also. One of the kids filled my mower gas tank with driveway gravel once, and after I cleaned things out, the mower never run so good. Also your spark may be grounding out somewhere before it gets to the spark plug. Check for a bad spot in the wires from the magneto. Some of that may be behind the flywheel though.

SOURCE: swisher 44" mower starts and runs but engine bogs

The engine in this machine seems to be powerful. If you can remove the belt from the pulley that drives the blade. Try turning the pulley buy hand. If it turns tight or not at all this is your problem. The unit that is the pulley to blade assembly is seized or ready to seize. Sometimes they are designed to be taken apart and repaired, and sometimes they are not. Did you check for a grease fitting within the pulley to blade unit?
I would like to hear how this works out for you. Best of luck.

Why is my Tecumseh 6.5 hp engine hard to start after taking blade off.?

When you tilt the mower too much oil will mix with gas. Try taking out the spark plug and cleaning it good in case some oil got on it. If this don't solve it, drain the gas and refill with fresh gas in case oil mixed with it when you tilted the mower.

Fuel problem with John Deere 23hp engine

time to pull the hose off the fuel pump coming from the tank and drain the tank and check flow of gas coming from tank hose, and possibly inline fuel filter is plugged or there is junk in your tank/line from tank not letting enough fuel to run to pump so pump can pump it to carb !

My exmark lawn mower has a 23 hp briggs and stratton vangaurd motor and when it is at ahigh rpm ist is running bad

it depends on where the fuel tank is follow the fuel line from the carb to the tank the pumps used on mowers look like a round cylinder with 3 lines going into it 1 to the carb one to the tank and one to the engine block/valve cover but sounds more like the carb needs a good cleaning pull the choke on a little and see if it runs smother

8 hp tecumseh on coleman generator not running at a constant rpm (galloping)

The carburetor is hunting for the right balance because it is dirty. You will have to remove it to clean it thoroughly. That is the proper way to resolve it, but if you may want to try to add a carburetor fuel injector fuel additive to the tank and run it out. It may help to stabilize the hunting when the engine is under load. The only way to see is to try it, if you are not ready to tackle a carburetor. I have seen this trick work on my lawn mower engine. It greatly minimized the problem on my engine. Keep in mind the ultimate fix is the rebuild of the carburetor.

I hope this helps.

Hi

Make sure the blade and shaft can easily be moved by hand. First, remove the spark plug wire from the plug. Reach under the mower and see if the blade will turn or if something is stuck between the blade and the mower. Also remember that you have to hold the safety bar when you are starting the mower or the engine won't turn. It is possible that the cable from the safety bar to the engine brake has come loose. Follow the cable from the safety bar to the engine and make sure it is working. Also check whether the line from the gas tank to the engine is crimped?

I have a pull start swisher trailmower. The cord

the cord could be tanlged up, pull it all the way out and make sure it is round the "bobbin" and not slipped off the side on the shaft. you wight be able to slip it back onto the bobbin with a screwdriver or piece of hooked wire - Also you are using the proper mix of 2 stroke and fuel?, 50:1 fuel to oil, or more for older.worn engines, say 40:1 for old engines, they run better like that - smell nice too.

apart from that... oil the puller mechanism, normal engine oil will do the trick - it can only help.

I have an mtd yard man mower that wont stay running, Any suggestions why?

I was having the exact same problem with my 6.5 hp Toro lawnmower with a Tecumseh engine. The engine would start up okay but after a few minutes of mowing, the mower would start missing and eventually shut down. I would pull and pull and pull on the starter rope, getting angry and frustrated and eventually going back in the house to let it cool down.

I looked up all kinds of information and I finally decided it was a bad coil (something about the resistance being low when the mower wasn't hot and then when it heated up the coil would conduct enough electricity to somehow make the engine shut down.)

I called a local shop and wanted to get an estimate on replacing the coil. I have no clue about engines so I dared not get into the guts of the mower myself. He told me to check the gas cap. HUH??????

He told me to make sure there wasn't a part missing out of it. I thought, what the heck would a gas cap have to do with the engine shutting down. Well, apparently there is a mechanism on these caps that prevents a vacuum from pulling on the fuel system and my gas cap indeed had a part missing. To verify this, I cut the grass for about 5 minutes. When it started to run rough, I took the gas cap off to allow pressure to escape from the gas tank and voila! it started to purr like a kitten.

So, I'm only out $4 for a new gas cap and I'm as good as new. Man I wish I was more mechanically inclined so I hope your problem is as easy to solve as this one.

Hope this helps!
