I've just cut and pasted this from the windows help files:-

To change the size of the virtual memory paging file

  1. Open how to down load to flash drive - shortcutcold.gifComputer Management (Local).
  2. In the console tree, right-click Computer Management (Local), and then select Properties.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click Performance Options, and under Virtual memory, click Change.
  4. In the Drive list, click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
  5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, type a new paging file size in megabytes in the Initial Size (MB) or Maximum Size (MB) box, and then click Set. If you decrease the size of either the minimum or maximum page file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. Increases generally do not require a restart.
note.gif Notes
  • To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
  • You must be recognized as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group on your computer and on the computer you are managing to perform this task.
  • You can view or change system properties on a remote computer or a local computer. To access a remote computer, right-click Computer Management (Local), click Connect to another computer, and then select the computer you want to connect to in the list.
  • For best performance, set the initial size to not less than the recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system.
  • Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory.
  • To delete a paging file, set both initial size and maximum size to zero.

Once you've set your virtual memory to satisfaction. Just plug your usb flash drive in and watch the bottom right hand corner of the screen. You'll see a couple of process messages the last of which will be "your device is now ready".

What may also happen is a window pops up and asks you how you want to view the files on your device and offer a few programmes with which to do it.

If its data for transfer, click on the folder option, its then just a case of dragging and clicking files over to your computer or vice versa.

If you're still not happy, click on to "Youtube" and search for "How to use a USB drive". There are several good video intruction files there.

For the better performance delete cookies, temp files from the computer.
Uninstall all the unwanted softwares from the computer.
Run disk clean up
  1. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.png, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking Disk Cleanup.
  2. In the Disk Cleanup Options dialog box, choose whether you want to clean up your own files only or all of the files on the computer. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b.png If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. If the Disk Cleanup: Drive Selection dialog box appears, select the hard disk drive that you want to clean up, and then click OK.
  4. Click the Disk Cleanup tab, and then select the check boxes for the files you want to delete.

1. Open the Start Menu. A) In the white line (Start Search) area, type dfrgui and press Enter.
OR
B) Click on All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then on Disk Defragmenter.

Increase the virtual memory of the computer.

How to increase Virtual Memory?

In Windows XP
1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
3.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
4.On the Advanced tab, under Virtual memory, click Change.
5.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
6.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click to Custom size check box. You can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size.
7.Click Set
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
Special Note: You should choose the same amount for the initial size and maximum size. This will Stop your CPU from constantly changing the paging file.

HOT TIP: To stop your CPU from constantly changing the paging file, set the initial and maximum size to the same value. For example, 500 and 500. The value should be at least 1.5 times more than your physical RAM. If your computer has 512MB of RAM increase the virtual memory paging file to 1.5*512= 768

In Vista

1. Click Start button Picture of the Start button
2. Click Control Panel
3. Choose System and Maintenance and then click System.
4. In the left pane, click Advanced system settings.
5.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
6. Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, choose Change.
7. Click Custom to change the Initial size (MB) and Maximum size. See the hot tip above.
This will improve the performance of the computer.
Thanks.

Windows XP Virtual Memory is low. How can I regain memory?

Virtual memory is "memory" on your hard drive, not actual memory. The best way to regain this is reboot and shut down some of the stuff that runs automatically when you DO boot up.

(This Virtual memory is space set aside on your hard drive that the processor moves data into and out of like it would put data on a memory module ... but in comparing the two, the virtual memory is SLOW.)

You can increase the size of your virtual memory to anything you want. Some say too large a allocation will slow you down and too little will cause crashing or slow opertion. You are 99.44% probably set to let Windows manage your virtual memory (default) at this time.

Virtual memory

Your hard drive is getting to full for it to be used as virtual memory
When normal memory gets used up windows uses the hard drive as memory ans if insufficient room on hard drive is not available you get this message.
Solution.
1) delete programs from hard drive to create more space
2) Install new hard drive and transfer programs to it. creating more room on C drive
3) If hard drive is already partitioned and 2nd partition has a lot of free space transfer Virtual over to it.

Go to Start / Control panel Open The System folder go to "Advanced" "performance settings"
Then to "Advanced " Click on change and set Virtual memory to new disk.
Set maximum and minimum the same at 3 times the amount of normal memory you ave

My acer aspire 5600 warned that I am running out of memory. My "D" drive says there is 30g of free space. How do I use it?

I think the computer actually said you were running low on Virtual Memory ... memory is the physical ram installed in your machine ... virtual memory is an area of hard drive the computer uses to store data when in runs out of "real" memory .....hard drive space is nothing to do with memory.

Ok, that got that cleared up :-) .... now the quickest way to get over low virtual memory problems is to install more RAM. For XP you should really have a minimum of 512mb .... 1gb is probably optimum. For Vista you should really have a minimum of 2gb.

So if your laptop has less than 512mb(xp) or 2gb(vista), the first thing to do would be to upgrade the memory.

Virtual memory problems should only ever crop up when you are running multiple applications .... so just try and keep the amount of programs you have running to a minimum. Instead of just minimizing programs, try to close them down to save memory.

Low virtual memory

Virtual memory means you're running out of memory, so it's using your hard drive storage as memory. This is slow. This is an indication you: Have too little memory and need to run fewer programs or install more memory; and also increase the size of your virtual memory, which will also make your disk space tighter. If you are really pinching the computer that badly, you may want to consider buying a new laptop altogether -- the prices have come down a -lot- just in the 2 1/2 years since you bought that. Anyway, to work around the immediate problem:

Your Gateway came with Windows XP Home Edition. Click Start: Control Panels. See if you can find the Performance control panel, possibly by switching to "Classic view." In there, look for the memory tab. Find the virtual memory section. It may be set to "Let Windows decide." change it to at least 1000mb.

You can get a bigger hard drive (after buying an external case to move stuff over) and upgrade your memory to as much as 1.25gb; but you may find those purchases to not be sensible relative to the price of a new laptop. Memory is cheap and relatively easy; the hard drive is more difficult and will set you back at least $100 if you do it yourself.
