My Hayward H Heater turns on, fires up the gas,

My Hayward H Above Ground Heater turns on, fires up the gas, starts to heat for about 20 seconds, then stops. The fan stays on and I smell gas. Turn it off, turn it back on, same thing. Cleaned my filter. I have 15-16 Lbs pressure on the gauge.

I have a Hayward H100IH pool heater. With the pool filter on the heater starts to heat up when I turn up the thermostat, but the heat turns off after a few seconds.

That doesn't sound fun. You could call the Hayward technical support number at 908-355-7995 and they might be able to figure this out. I hope this helps.

The heater turns on and heats up . but after about 15-20 seconds it goes cold and the blower fan still runs. it does this a couple of times then doesn't get hot after that.

I had the same problem. I believe it was due to a clog in the gas orifices. It would run for a bit and then decide there wasnt enough gas coming out and stop. you need to clean those or get a new one. there's probably rust or other **** in the lines that may need cleaned out.

My heater starts and then after about 3 seconds shuts off

Either , you really don't have good pressure (below 18 PSI on filter) or your water pressure swith is defect.
Try placing your filter on "recir" and fire the heater , if it fires and stays on .....it's definitely your pressure -back wash.
hope it helps
