Sony KP-53HS10 Flicker, Crackling, Blue Shadow Problem

Hello All,

Can any one tell me what might be the problem with my Sony KP-53HS10 set? It's been getting progressively worse to the point where I can't stand it any more. If u know what's wrong with it, how much will it cost to fix it? Should I by a new set. Very cash conscious now. Thanks!

I was changing the channels to show that the problem exists on different channels.

  • jseiwert Apr 16, 2008

    reseting did not work.

I am considering a fix myself.

  • jseiwert Apr 16, 2008

I've got the service manual and service troubleshooting guide. i can send it if u like.

  • jseiwert Apr 16, 2008

I don't think its the remote or front buttons as this happens without changing the channels. The channels don't mysteriously change. I like the idea of convergence burned out. There is a definate crackle-snap sound when the picture goes from sort of normal (blue shift of 1/2") to the bow-flicker.

When you get the video and goes OFF, do you hear some sort of static noise from the back of the TV?

I just watched the video part without speakers, so I would not be able to hear if there were some static noises.

  • Jaime Hernandez Apr 17, 2008

The crackle-snap is a high voltage leakage on one of your CRTs. I would say is in the blue one.

If you follow the correct safety procedures outline in the service manual and troubleshooting guide to disconnect the high voltage wire that feeds about 32K volts to the CRT.

At this point after disconnecting the wire, you should a stable image but without the blue color. Most times the CRT leaks liquid coolant causing the arching of the high voltage.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

  • Jaime Hernandez Apr 17, 2008

The convergence board is fine and It will not cause this type of intermittent failure.

Let me know when you find the CRT that is creating that problem. I will advice next step to get the TV fix.

Looks like some of the convergence IC's are toast. The flickering is due to dry solders.. I would begin by looking for dry solders and re-soldering them..

no it happens if the remote control board hangs up also ..

so if you remove the connection of the remote control board and after that if you on the tv and once again off the tv and reconnect that remote control board then it will work fine ...
or if you have any reset option if you reset also it will work fine ...

Try reseting the tv

To reset the tv, turn on the tv, then while holding down the reset button on the remote control, press the power button on the tv front panel.
the Tv will turn off and then turn on again. Then release the reset button to complete the reset procedure.

if that doesnt help, disconnect the power cord for a short period of time, (approximately 1 minute) then reconnec the power cord and power on the tv.

  • Ekse Apr 12, 2008

if the issue still persists, the tv needs to be repaired.

you can get it repaired at http://eservice.sony.com

it should tell you how much it would cost

if someone gives bad advice, you can rate them as thanks for trying.

Also I talked with Sony support and the problem indeed is hardware if my suggestions dont work, please use the link I gave you to get repairs unless your going to do it yourself somehow.

  • Ekse Apr 16, 2008

doing it your self will be difficult, even I with years of experience in electronics would have a difficult time with it.

Well first thing we need is a service manual, most likey cost. Contact sony? Il look around

Then we need to figure out what parts are faulty and what needs to be replaced, whole boards or only components?

Il get the service manual for a start.

  • Ekse Apr 16, 2008

Ok, so you have the service manual. Ofcourse its dangerious to fix a tv yourself are you awere of this?

You can start by inspecting the capasitors if any are bulky or broken they would need to be replaced. Then theres the convergence ic's and so on.

Will probably take alot of time and energy. Sorry I don't know witch components could be causeing this problem actually. Il contact the expert ginko maybe he has knowledge in this.

Try adjusting the screen control on the fly back. The fly back can be easily located, find the red wire attached to the top of the picture tube & follow it down to the fly back. on the fly back you should find two controls, one screen & one focus. you should be able to read the words above each control, only adjust the screen one. slightly increase the control till the picture stays on, if you turn it too much you will get small white lines going across the screen. Now if what i have told you fixes the set, then it is only a temporary repair. could last days or months, maybe years. if it starts to happen again later the set will have to be replaced. this is a sign of the picture tube starting to get a weak. ALSO DO NOT PLAY WITH THE RED WIRE IT CARRIES VERY HIGH VOLTAGES EVEN WHEN UNPLUGGED FOR DAYS.

Ok from what i see in this video, you have a bow at the top turning this flash. looks like you may have a weird shorting problem in your convergance ic's. try unplugging all your convergace yoke connectors and see if it stops. if so then you will need to replace all conv ic's. do not run set with conv unplugged for very long as it will cause resistors to heat up and possible burn them out.
30 secs to a minute max for testing. if you tv does not do this when you first turn it on, then wait for it to act up, then unplug conv plugs while set is on.

ya, unplug the connector goin to the front buttons on the tv while its doin this, if it stops then you need to replace the small buttons on the pc board.

  • Scott Henderson
    Scott Henderson Apr 13, 2008

also, if you want a temp fix, you can remove the buttons, and not use them, but you will have to use the remote only.

so that must have been you changing channels durring the video?

the crackle sound makes me think you have a small high voltage leak causing a discharge goin into the yoke. I would take off the front bottom panel and watch it, you may see a small spark. if you have found your problem. replacing the hv wire and anode cup. also please check all wires goin into hv splitter to make sure they look ok and are seated correctly. If don't see anything, can you hear a hissing sound? if so you may need a high voltage probe to find your leak. please be careful if you have this problem as you can get hit very easy. if thats not your problem, i have seen sony tv with bad projection tubes. this being one of them in that line. to see if this is your problem, remove the crt from each tube one at a time and turn on set.

if your problem stops then you have a bad tube.

i have also seen it where turning down the screens one at a time will slow the problem so you can see what tube it is. but sometimes doesnt work that way.

    good luck.

This sounds like a bad blue CRT (cathode ray tube) The repair on this is a major job. Beyond the tube replacement it would then require some convergence alignment and possibly some setup on the other related service adj. such as geometry. You may want to get an estimate from a reputable local repair company.

Sony kp-53hs10 picture is cloudy and 3 colors at bottom of screen red blue and green

Look at attached photo--if it is what you have you have a convergence problem.

The KP-53HS10 uses two of the STK-392-020 convergence chips.

Both will need to be replaced and the set adjusted--parts cost on ebay is less than 20 dollars--repair consists of two things--getting at the parts and then replacing them--chips are soldered in so you need to be able to un solder them and solder the new ones in.

Hello, I have a Sony KP-53HS0 projection Tv. I plan to attach a HD receiver to it. What kind of cable do i need? Will I need some type of adapter?

You can just use any standard component cable Red/Green/Blue doesnt have to be anything fancy, I dont really buy into monster cables being that much better than just standard quality cables from Walmart/Kmart

KP-53HS10 Real HD

On this TV there is only one input for any HD resolution. Input # 5 is the component input i.e. red/green/blue cable. Just get the correct cable and match colors from cable box to TV this will allow the TV to display 1080i resolution ( only one this TV supports ). FYI you will also have to connect the red and white cables to the appropriate inputs to get any sound because red/green/blue connectors are just for video display not sound. Once your connected you'll be able to access video # 5 be sure to set your cable box to 1080i resolution also. I hope this helps later J.
