Syncmaster 245b - no backlight

Hi
I have had a samsung syncmaster 245b for about 3 years now. At some point it started showing small artifacts on the screen but these would always go away upon turning the screen off and on again right away.
Yesterday while working on it (hooked up to my Thinkpad docking station buildin DVI port) it suddenly went black. Power LED still seems to work normally and Win7 still seems to detect the screen. The screen doesn't flicker, it never did, its just black. I oppened it up to look for bulged caps but I see none :( Please, any advice on what could be wrong and how to fix it would be much obliged :)
Regards
RUne

I have a pretty standard "mastech" multimeter, can I use that to properly test the caps?

First, the caps can look OK but they can have high ESR (http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Bad%20capacitors/)

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed SAMSUNG monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

You need the cap meter taht can read ESR, I use SENCORE LC-75 that I bought many years ago for about $600. Without it all you can do is to install the new caps (for home repair this is the best method since you need to remove the caps anyway for accurate testing, for me I use the LC 75 to analyze the caps and for incoming parts QC) which sometime it will be better for 3 years old monitors. i would use PANASONIC FMor FM series from DIGIKEY.

I fixed this by replacing the CM802 18nF 630V capacitor.

Good Luck!

Eyeland_elec, Follow the lead of "budmrtn"!! He is in the top 5 -6 lcd monitor tech's out of hundreds that are here on fixya. If you would have noted and told us the manufacturer's name printed on the side of the electrolytic filter capacitors we might be able to tell you "right off the bat" to get new ones and install them. One more hint. If possible, document your unit "tear-down" with close-up digital pics so you can make assembly work a bit easier. If you see "CapXon" on any caps, all I can say is good luck. 12fixlouie

Is the color filter going out?sometimes i have a red screen

The most common cause of a red or pnik tint to the picture is a weak or failing backlight tube. LCD monitors use very small florescent tubes to provide the backlight and when they start to go out the output red or pink tinted light not white. You can replace the bulbes but in most cases it is not worth the trouble. You should chack the date on the back of the monitor, if it is less than 3 years old then contact Samsung for a warranty repair, if older than 3 years then get a new monitor.

Hello, I've got a S. Syncmaster 245b, but the powerbutton light is on, but the screen stays dark black. Not even the note of it searching for digital or analog signals. What would be the most...

The power supply is not feeding the 24vdc to the inverter board, or bad backlights inverter board, those are the two boards you need to check.

No backlight on Samsung 710N LCD Monitor

No, it is not easy to change the backlight on an LCD panel. The backlight is an integrated part of the LCD panel itself. The backlight for LCD monitors is also model and manufacturer specific, so there's no easy place to order a backlight to do it yourself. The good news is that your Samsung monitor should come standard with a 3 year warranty, so if it's less than 3 years old, you can call Samsung and they'll repair/replace it for free. If it's over 3 years old, then you may need to repalce the monitor... or pay to have it repaired.

Samsung SyncMaster 920nw suddenly went black now squeaks/flickers

The 920nw did have a 3 year warranty on the unit but they will be out of warranty now. The flickering power light is an indication of a failure in the power supply board. When the board fails it can't start up correctly and the power shuts down over and over so you get the blinking light and no display. This is a very common failure point on all LCD monitors after a few years of use. There are parts called capacitors on the power supply board and they filter the output power. When they fail the power is not properly regulated and the power supply shuts down and tried to restart so you get the flashing. Here is a link to a repair guide that will show you how to dis-assemble the unit and then what to look for and replace to get it back up and running again.

The repair guide has pictures and videos to guide you through the repair.
I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

Samsung syncmaster 245b plus

Oct 23, 2009- This is how it went for me..I have a Samsung SYNCMASTER2.gif 2053BW. I leave my monitor on and let it hybernate when I shut down PC. I'm 3 months outside of my warranty. Two weeks ago something started happening. I boot PC and video doesn't come up for 10 minutes, and when it came up it worked perfect. VC/Monitor/MB?? It became 20 minutes and ...now..I have the analog/digital box in top left screen, power light on monitor flashing, no menu available on monitor and none of the other buttons work for anything. I test the monitor on Laptop..nothing(same as above)..I break out the old(working) monitor from deep within the closet. Plug it in and I'm up and running. So...

HOW TO OPEN A SYNCMASTER 2053BW

NO SCREWS!!! Assuming that the stand mount has been pulled out..The seam around the screen frame is where you start. The frame has the prongs, the back cover has what the prongs slip over. The frame is coming off first! I got the side to open by finger, then used a small standard screwdriver to pry ever so gently(lifting frame from rearcover). Leave the power button assembly on the frame, pull wire only a little to relax any tension..you get about 3/4" in extra taped to panel. The hard part is done.;) Still holding the frame...Now lift the panel (where the power button assembly wiring goes under panel) with the power housing that is under it as a whole and you will see where the powerbuttonassemble detaches.Remove frame. Now..holding edges of panel into back cover, lift and flip the whole thing over and place panel face down on a perfectly flat surface..a towel on my desk works. Lift and remove back cover.Your now looking at the back of the board housing. The ribon is simple, on the panel end of the ribon, squeez the outer clips together and slide it away against the panel..The secondary tin plate is removable, two clips super close to where the sets of wires come around the housing and into the panel.Unhook the 4 plugs(pink inside/blue outside)...Now lift the power housing off of the panel. The big board has the power. One screw to remove a ground plate first. Two screws to remove power board. Pics from phone.56ec44b.jpg
aae8fab.jpg
Reassemble but DO NOT re-snap the frame into place....yet... Test it! There is a reason the caps got hot in the first place, therfore it has a good chance of happening again. This is not fullproof...but.....mine has been on now for close to 6 hours with no glitches whatsoever. So I have resnapped mine back together. I hope you can too. Oct 23, 2009- I must also add that this is one of the best producing monitors I have ever seen...in 60hz. The clarity is top notch. If you purchase one get the extended warranty. FYI...I paid $4.00 for those caps.

19" Samsung SyncMaster washed out display

You either have a backlighting problem or the power supply is getting weak and starting to fail.
If you have another computer...connect it and see if the results are the same...also check your cables, analog and/or digital for any faults.
Good luck...i hope this helps.

Syncmaster 245B Monitor Shivering horizontal lines

Which type of video connector are you using? VGA or DVI?

If you are using VGA, the horizontal line could be due to interference, like from an electric motor (fan) near the video cable.

Other thing to try is to change the refresh rate. In Windows XP: Control panel --> Display Properties --> Settings tab --> Advanced button --> Monitor tab --> Screen refresh rate. The default ot 60Hz for LCD monitors. Bump it up to 75Hz. That could give a clue to the problem or maybe even fix it.
