Question about Dishwashers

2 Answers

My kenmore/whirlpool dishwasher makes a noise, sort of a grinding noise, throughout most of the cycle. I have removed the pump and motor thinking that their might be something in the pump, but there is nothing there. My guess is that the motor is making the noise, but I do not know how to tell other than by replacing the motor and seeing if the noise goes away.

The first expert did not tell me how to tell if the noise is coming from the motor. That is why I am asking another expert.

  • genemosca Jun 09, 2010

The solution was helpful. I replaced the motor and the machine once again runs quietly. I saved money by doing the repair myself.
    Thanks for the help.

Hi

Thank You for usingFixYa. To start with check the pump and try to clean it out, then check drainhose for any obstruction. Also check for a bad bearing on the spray arm. Ifstill the issue is not resolved then it’s the motor that makes the noise you hear. The motor has bearings in it which may become worn or get rusty. When thebearings get worn, they allow the shaft to wobble which can get quite loud. Ifthere is a spin seal leak, water may get inside the motor, washing the bearinggrease away. If the spin seal is leaking, you’ll notice water leaking fromunder the dishwasher. There is also a disc attached to the top of the motorcalled a slinger. It sometimes breaks off and spins around the motor's shaftwhile it turns, causing some noises. You will need to replace the motor if thebearings are bad. You also need to replace the motor if the slinger is brokenas well. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

I have checked the pump and cleaned it out. There is no noise when the dishwasher is draining, so I am ruling out the drain hose as being the problem.

You wrote: Also check for a bad bearing on the spray arm.
I did spin the spray arms to see if that generated the noise. It did not. Is that what you meant when you said to check for a bad bearing on the spray arm?

It seems to me the motor bearings the most likely cause. I am going to order a new motor.

You wrote: If the spin seal is leaking, you’ll notice water leaking from under the dishwasher.
There is no water under the dishwasher, so that is not it.

I will accept the solution when the issue is resolved, that is, when the noise is gone.

    Thanks,
    Gene

Hi,

Okay, since it only happens in the wash mode your problem is with the motor itself. The motor is not necessarily bad but the water path for the motor may be clogged. Since you have already checked the arm I recommend that if you have a shop vac or wet dry vac that you again remove the spray arm and vacuum out the tube that the spray arm goes into.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Did what you asked. The noise remains as before. What next?

  • genemosca Jun 06, 2010

I am asked, in red print, to accept or reject your proposed solution. Unfortunately, there is no Reject Solution button, only an Accept Solution button. How am I supposed to reject a solution?

Loud sounds

Many Frigidaire dishwashers come with the promise of being the "quietest dishwasher in its class," according to Frigidaire. However, a quiet dishwasher doesn't necessarily mean that the dishwasher is silent, as some noises are normal. It can take some troubleshooting at times to determine if a noise coming from the dishwasher is typical or if it indicates a larger problem Listen for the sound of water filling and draining throughout the wash cycle. These sounds are normal and do not indicate an issue.

  • 2 Pay attention to the drain motor, which operates at the beginning of each cycle. This noise should be fairly quiet and should not sound like a loud, grinding or banging sound.
  • 3 Note that the sound will change when the wash cycle moves between the lower and middle spray arms. This sound should be temporary and fairly quiet.
  • 4 Look for hard items in the dishwasher grinder or filter if a loud crunching, buzzing or grinding sound is heard. The dishwasher can typically grind up these items within one or two cycles, but the item may be lifted out and discarded to eliminate the sound.
  • 5 Remove the bottom rack and spray arms from the bottom of the dishwasher if there is a loud noise coming from the dishwasher that does not resolve itself. Look inside for the impeller, which is round and spins. Remove any debris that may be clogging up the impeller or pump.

Please provide model number of the kenmore dishwasher.

Is there water in the base when the wash is complete? There could be couple of pumps in some Kenmore dishwashers - so hard to know which one until model number is known.

Dishwasher when in wash cycle make a horrible noise! not quiet at all!

    Hi,

If this happens throughout most of the wash cycle and is a grinding type noise it could be one of two things. The first is a bad bearing on the motor which goes bad due to a seal leak on the pump. If this is the case the pump and motor need replaced.

The second cause could be some debris caught in the chopper area of the sump. I have put together some instructions on how to clean it out. If you are interested in doing so follow the link below.

Makes growling noises throughout the cycle.

HI. here are the most common issues that will cause a noise during the wash.

    * Check the spray arm for damage and obstructions
    * Check the inlet filter screens
    * Test the water inlet valve(see below for test procedure)
    * Check the motor and mounts- The motor may e loose or one of the mounts may have separated form the housing. this will cause mis-alignment.
    * Check the fan motor and blade
    * Check the drain for obstructions

    NOTE

If all checks out above, the culprit will be a cracked pump impeller. this will occur if the drive stud becomes unstable, allowing the impeller to partially separate form the motor spin drive stud. this will cause the impeller to rub or grind during the wash cycle. If this is the case, there are impeller repair kits available for purchase that will correct this issue.

My Kenmore Elite dishwasher makes a buzzing noise when going through the wash cycle. It's a couple years old and I don't want to replace it!

the possible causes.it could be some hard debris near the chopper blade inside the pump or some times water seal on the pump goes bad and water leaks into the motor bearing/rusting it and starts grinding noise.open the pump from inside and reach the choper blade and look for any hard debris.if find nothing then motor assly needs to be chgd.

Kenmore Ultrawash Quiet Guard 5 making buzzing/grinding noise

I have a very similar dishwasher, with a very similar problem. I fixed it by removing debris from the water evacuator pump located towards the front of the bottom of the machine (the last motor before the drain hose. In my case, grape stems had clogged it up. Once emptied, it purrs once again. NOTE: don't disassemble the motor, just flush it out, there is an o-ring gasket that is a bear to re-install.

Load grinding noise, like the engine is working too hard.

Most likely the motor/pump assembly is worn out and grinding. If the machine is less than five years old it is under warranty. If over five years old, the repair part alone is about $150 not including labor.
