Question about Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-27HS420 27" TV

1 Answer

The TV randomly fades to green and then turns off. It's been doing this for almost two years now. We took it in to be serviced, and the repairperson could not duplicate the effect. It seems to have started happening around the time the cable company went to digital. A friend suggested that we change the settings on our DVR to reflect HD settings, and that seemed to work for a couple of days, but now it's doing it again. The picture fades and turns off usually at commercials or dramatic scene changes. It will also do it while we're watching a DVD.

Try lowering the brightness and contrast. Sounds like you are overdriving the picture tube. Green gun in picture tube may have a shorting element; if so no fix for that other than pic tube replacement.

How to fix dead pixels

Cheaper to throw away instead of trying to fix, if green is fading the rest will soon follow, I gather it must be near 4 or 5 years old as this seems to be the life span, sorry I have no solution as even dead pixel fixers will not restore lifeless colour, this is usually worn out caps and backlight.

It seems like the color wheel might start to fail.
Do you hear any abnormal sound(s) from the TV when ramdon color appears.
Would you be able to check and make sure all the fans are working properly?

TV picture fades, then shuts off

There are some components in the scan amplifiers, and or the power supply area that have become unstable. This can happen with age and use. It is impossible to make an accurate assessment without actually troubleshooting the set.

You need an experienced TV service tech that is strong on troubleshooting, has the service manuals, and has the proper set-up to work on your set. I would recommend the factory service rather than an independent service tech unless you know for sure that the independent service tech can handle this type of repair.

Considering the age of the model of set that you have, I would be looking at replacing it rather than fixing it. Because of the age of the set the reliability will be decreased.

Broke

You are having a high voltage power supply issue I would not advise you to work on this problem yourself due to the dangerous voltages that are present. I would advise you to call a repair shop and get a qualified repairperson to take care of this problem.
