From VideoLAN official website, we learn that MKV is really one of VLC Player supported video formats. Since MKV is a container format which can contain many tracks with different audio and video compression formats, many people are stuck with "VLC stuttering or choppy when playing HD MKV", "Can't hear the sound of MKV files at all" or "VLC just load MKV file all the time".

Here is a step by step guide on How to Solve "VLC Not Playing MKV or HD MKV Files" Issue?

With this guide, you can easily solve "VLC Player No Sound", "
MKV or HD MKV Skipping", and "MKV or HD MKV Choppy" issues.

VLC official site says VLC does support MKV files. However, sometimes, we still have trouble in playing MKV in VLC. For example, the MKV files is HD or the file length is long, when add or import MKV to VLC, VLC player says MKV doesn't have cook audio codec and more.

I know a step-by-step guide to play MKV in VLC. Freely playing HD MKV videos in 720P, 1080P, and MKV videos in AC3 5.1 codec in VLC is not a problem.

This guide helps:

  • Play HD MKV, 720P MKV, 1080P MKV, and other standard MKV files in VLC
  • Play MKV with AC3 codec, MKV with 5.1 channels in VLC
  • Play MKV in VLC on Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista
  • Play MKV in VLC on 10.8(OS X Mountain Lion), 10.7(Lion), 10.6(Snow Leopard), Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard)
  • Import MP4, AVI, WMV, MOV, MPEG, Xvid, DivX, 3GP, FLV, MOD, TOD, WTV, MXF, MVI, F4V, AVCHD videos to play on VLC
  • Enjoy APE, MP3, AAC, AC3, WAV, WMA, and more on VLC.

My windows could not play mpeg 4 or mp4 format..does a k lite codec could help?

You may want to install the codec pack from the link below, to ensure you have all the codecs required to run all video formats.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm

If this still doesn't help, you may need to reinstall your Windows Media Player (or other media software), and then apply the codec pack again.

What I do is download the klite codec mega pack and be sure to check Windows Media Player as one of the players to use it on when you download klite in the configurations. Or you can go and get VLC media player which has all the codecs you will need to play these files. This is what I use. So I know it works. Here are the links below. I hope that this assisted you. Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Here's a link for CCCP, it's a codec pack which should take care of all your needs, I did a quick search to make sure it's still clean of viruses/spyware and it seems it is

CCCP

you may still need haali media splitter to play .mkv files in media player so here's a link and the link to the .mkv site:

Haali - direct download
.mkv site - main site for the matroska format (.mkv)

if all else fails use vlc, it plays anything, if it doesn't play in that then it won't play in anything

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

I used to use all of these when I used windows and still use vlc now.
