It is probable that you blew out the seals and will need your transmission repaired. You can try to slip a small hose down the dip stick tube and draw out the extra fluid, there is a slight chance that your transmission will work if you get the fluid level back down where it should be.

1999 Ford Taurus transmission fluid about 4 inches above full mark

Even overheated transmission fluid would not expand this much. If too much fluid has been put in, it can begin to foam. You haven't mentioned any indication of air bubbles on the stick. It won't shift because you have too much fluid.

Too much fluid can damage the seals, yielding leaks. None of this is good news. Here is advice:

Can a transmission malfunction if overfilled with transmission fluid?

How Does Overfilling Cause Problems? If you overfill the transmission, you will find that the fluid may foam, and that can lead to erratic gear shifting. Other problems can include transmission damage and oil starvation.

Hi there, I have autotransmission for mercury mystique 1995 LS 4 cylinders,it shift from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3 so easily but from 3 to 4 the odometer speed goes from 2500 RPM suddenly to 4000 RPM and the...

Hi there,

The Check Engine light is primarily for faults relating to the engine emission circuits.

The condition you have described above means you have transmission "slippage" in the 4th gear / overdrive circuit. This can be caused by many factors.

Changing trans fluid is always the first step, but...

1) Use ONLY FORD approved trasmission fluids (specifically for your Mercury) - do not use any other brand/type, unless specified.
2) Fluid level MUST be checked correctly - while idling, move lever through all gears, resting lever in Neutral, then checking level.
3) NEVER overfill the trans above required level - this could cause the same symptoms as underfilling (foaming etc)

Your vehicle should be checked for diagnostic codes from the Trasmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM). I'm confident one or more codes (between P0700 - P0999) will be stored in memory, allowing you to identify the suspected circuit.

Until this diagnostic check has been performed (will only take 15mins by an experiences Ford technician), you should not attempt to replace any further parts.

Hope this helps....

Light that looks like exclamation point in a circle located below tachometer flashing.

First off you need an owner's manual. You can get a free one here. http://pdfservicemanual.com/automotive/2001-ford-taurus-owners-manual The light that looks like a gear with an exclamation point inside indicates there is a problem with the transmission. May just be low of transmission fluid. To check the level dive the car until the transmission is warm, park on a level surface, place gear shift in park with engine running, and check transmission fluid level. Add only if necessary and do not overfill. If it is not low of fluid then seek professional help. The exclamation point in a circle under the fuel gauge next to the Brake light indicates you are low of brake fluid. Check the level of the brake fluid. If it is low you more than likely need to check your brake pads as they are worn out.

Where do you put the gear fluid in the 96 accord?

Hi!!

If you mean transmission fluid? It goes in the same place where your dip stick goes into. You need a small end, long funnel.

Take Transmission Dip Stick out, insert funnel and add manufactured recommended fluid as nedded. DO NOT OVERFILL

96 taurus wagon goes to neutral when vehicle comes to full stop.

That would be your neutral park switch is bad or broken. If the shifter linkage is not aligned with the neutral park switch it will not work properly. Located on drivers side on top of Trans.
