Question about Cub Cadet Street Sign- tractor lawn riding mower parts

1 Answer

Blades will not engage

Hit a stone and the blades stopped rotating and now will not engage. I checked for a blockage around the blades. The belt is still intact. The mower is 4 hours old....just purchased it.

Craftsman Model Number: 917.377151 motor shuts down when blades engaged

The engaging of the mowdeck is cause an excessive demand of your engine. From that, we can assume your problem is in the deck. Since the power drive is all about belts and it threw the belts, from your information I can only deduce that either an object (stick-wood-rock) has wedge into a position that has stopped rotation of the blades. Also, each blade has a pulley/spindle. These have bearings which must be free to rotate.
A bearing failure or seizing can also cause the problem you report.

Follow safety rules in your manual to insure the engine cannot start. Attempt to rotate each blade to check for free rotation. If the do not you most likely will need to remove the mower deck and check further. An obstruction or seized spindle should be easy to determine and sit repair is easily possible.

Check the belt routing. I've had a belt that was a little stretched out grab the pull incorrectly and the force stopped the engine.

Ran over a tree root and bent a blade. Replaced blades. Checked belts. Belts are fitting loosely. Mower won't shift into gear fwd. or bkwd. Transmission not engaging. What might be the problem?

The gear would, obviously, have been engaged when you hit the root. I presume this will have caused some resistance in the friction material of your transmission. Consider the engine rotating the trans and the root stopping it from rotating, the transmission and the blade will have borne the brunt . Have your transmission checked for damage

Model # 917.289072 19.5 42" When i engage blades it is very noisy like metal on metal It seems to cut ok but I don't want to mess it up more I changed blades and changed oil

Did you check the spindle assembly. I had one that cracked on my mower and had to replace it.It could be broken at one of the corners and this makes the blade spin off balance or not turn at all.Or a pulley could be worn or bent and the belt makes it rotate against the other metal parts. This happened because I hit some stones. They can damage other parts of the mower deck as well as ruin the cutting blades. You can do an online chat with SEARS parts too and their tech may have more info which may hepl diagnose the problem. Good luck,

Jean

Mower blades won't engage

Did the smoking stop when you disengaged the blades? If so it is most likely your belt that is smoking. Make sure all the blades turn freely by hand to ensure you have not hit anything that may have bent a shaft on one of the blades. If one of the shafts is bent and wont turn FREELY, the belt driving the blades would slip and start smoking as it tried to turn them.

be sure the blades are not bent and you dont feel any wiggle when pushing them up and down. be sure nothing is wrapped around the spindles. be sure the belt isnt damaged and tight when the deck is engaged to cut with the engine off.

Blades won,t disengage

Assuming this is a lever actuated deck (not electric p.t.o style) I would be checking the belt pivot tensioner assembly which the cable would be hooking to a lot of times moisture will get between the pivot and the deck and rust up not allowing the heavy return spring to slide the pivot back removing the tension from the belt. If you spray the pivot with a good lubricant and hand work the pivot tensioner back and forth it should loosen up. Usually it's the other way around and the 1st time of the year you use it you can't get it to engage.

Was mowing the lawn and the blades stopped rotating and won't engage.

Check that the belt didn't break. If the belt is fine check the pto it may not engage the blabes. Some pto's are electric some manual. Depending on what you have to do to engage the blades. That will tell you where to check.
