Hi, i'm not tto familiar with your laptop, but i'll try and help.
Do you want to disable the buttons as well? or is it just the tapping that you want to disable? I know it can be a pain in the bum, but there should be a squigily icon on the bottom right of the task bar where the clock is. If it isn't there you will have to go into the control panel.
Now i'll presume you are running Vista, anything else will be similar procedure.

  • Click start - ControlPanel
  • Open Mouse Icon
  • Go through the different tabs and look at the different settings.
  • There may be a tab called Synaptics or Device Settings.
I hope this helps you, if you would like me to be a little clearer about it, let me know.

Please leave feedback if this has sorted you out.

Tony

Hi,

best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

I want to disable the touchpad and use the external mouse exclusively

Some laptops don't have dedicated buttons but you can use Function keys (like Fn + F5 on Dell computers) to toggle the state of your touch pad. In the case of HP laptops, you can hold the top-left corner of the touchpad for few seconds and it will disable the touch pad - repeat this to re-activate it.

New laptop computers either have a physical on/off button to easily disable the touch pad or there's an icon in the system tray that lets you manage the various settings of the touchpad. If you don't have that icon, you can go to Control Panel -> Mouse Properties -> Touch Pad to enable or disable the touchpad.

The touch pad can also be disabled through the device manager. Type devmgmt.msc in the Windows Run box to start the device manager, expand "Mice and other Pointing devices", right-click and disable the driver entry that says Touch pad or likewise.

Hope this information will help.

Your response is very much appreciated. Thank you for using Fixya...

Hi i cant disable my touch pad on hp cq42

Try going into device manager by right clicking on 'my computer' or 'computer' in the start menu and then clicking properties, then look for device manager. Your touch pad should be listed under 'mice and other pointing devices' or something similar, depending on your version of windows. Right click it, then click disable on the menu that pops up.

There is no touch pad device setting in my laptop in order to disable my touchpad but my touch pad is working

Most of the time the settings are either found in the control panel and then mouse or else in start > all programs> and control (sometimes Catalyst center) you can also right click the pointing device in the taskbar and in device settings it will allow you to disable it from here.

How to disable touchpad

To enable/disable touch pad go to "Device Manager" (right click on My Computer icon on the Desktop). Pick "Mice and other pointing devices", right click on your touch pad, select instal/uninstal. May need to reboot the computer if requested.
However - if you do not have any other pointing device (USB mouse) you will only have keyboard for your disposal.

Wireless Button Disabled

After one month of trying everything, I finally figured this one out.  First turn off and restart your computer.  Then press F10 to enter the System BIOS Settings.  Select F9 (Setup Defaults) and when it asks Load Default Configuration Now? , Enter YES.  Then, press F10 (Save and Exit) and when it asks Save Configuration Changes And Exit Now, Enter YES.  This should restore the wireless LAN button to its original factory settings.  Once you restart the computer the button will be listed as disabled, but press on the button and it should work again.  I hope this helps someone else out!

Touchpad

You can go to the Control Panel (Select the start button and then either "Control Panel" or "Settings" and then "Control panel") and double click the Mouse properties icon.

Then you can select the "Device Select" tab and check the box marked "Disable Touch Pad when USB Pointing Device is present."

That is also where you can permantly disable the touch pad by simply selecting "Disable Device" and "Disable Button"

Hope that helps.
