Clean all the connections from battery to starter, selonoid connections to and ground cable where it connects to the battery and to where it connects to the frame it might just be a bad connection on frame i seen alot of poulans with this problem.

Why poulan pro riding mower wont charge

First check your battery, make sure the cells are good and no bad cells. If that is good then the issue is under the flywheel. There is a coil under your flywheel that serves as a generator. You can just purchase a 2 am charger with a breaker, that will kick out when battery is charged and hook that up after each use. If you jump a unit or charge a unit with more than 2 amps, you can burn the generator coil out under the flywheel. Also check the magnet under the flywheel. I have seen them come out.

Poulan 38" riding mower.

Battery is likely dead - or has built a sediment bridge - shorting the anode and cathode.
Jump-start the tractor with your vehicle - or another battery to check.

Or - use a multimeter to ensure your battery is not draining to 0V when you attempt to start.
This also indicates a failed battery. It may have a decent float charge - but when the load starter) is applied - the voltage will drop right out.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

My battery keeps going dead on my poulan pro 500ex rider i already replaced the battery 4 months ago and its dead again.

Not too surprising. Unless you use it very often, the battery will go flat fairly easily. Was the old battery tested to have failed? It is possible you have a bad alternator or connection to the alternator. An easy way to keep your battery is with a float charger; it keeps the battery charged to perfection and ready to go. I have no power to my shed, so I use a solar one. It cost about 34 dollars at Harbor Freight (.com) Farmerbear at FixYa.com

Cranks sounds like a dead battery but battery is charged wont start and will start if jumped by a truck battery

You may have a dead cell in the battery. Have you had a load test done on it. I use 300 CCA batteries and recommend them on all riding mower. They may cost a little more but well worth the cost.

Mower will not start will make clicking noise. did start at for one minute

Your battery is dead. Replace it.
In the winter keep a smart trickle charger on the battery to prevent it from discharging. Lead/acid batteries lose 1% of their charge per day and are basically junk in 3 months. They have to be kept charged.
