Totally happened to me last week. I discovered that the metal piece that fell off and holds the needle has a small screw that holds it in place. It needs an Allen wrench (tiny one) to tighten it back into place. I just lucked into figuring it out.

What fell out was the needle clamp gib - a small wedge-like part that presses on the needle to hold in place.
You may be able to get it repaired or replaced.
Search online for parts, or ask a sewing machine service tech for an estimate for having the machine repaired.

I used a 5/64" allen wrench to replace the needle bar. A simple fix which cost me a kiss (to my husband) instead of 109.95 to the service tech.
