Question about Computers & Internet

My company just moved from Exchange Server to Google Apps. It looks like that there is no way to share the contacts across the company other than having individual address book. Is that any way to have a central address book that can be shared by all email address in Google Apps? We are so used to this function provided by Active Directory. Thanks in advance!

Administrators can now activate a feature to automatically create a shared address book which includes all the users on your organization’s Google Apps domain. The address book makes it even easier to get in touch with everyone in your organization without going to a separate list or company directory.
When composing a new email or sharing a document, you now have the option to search through all the users on your domain, even if they aren’t in your personal contact list. Need to send a note Paula S in Sales, but aren’t sure of her email address? As long as she has a Google Apps account on your organization’s domain, all you have to do is type in the first few letters “Pau … “ and your address book will help with the rest.
Currently, you can access the shared address book from Gmail while composing a new message, or from Google Docs & Spreadsheets on the “Share” tab. Click the “choose from contacts” link and a smaller window should appear.

    The Shared Contacts API allows client applications to retrieve and
    update external contacts that are shared to all users
    in a Google Apps domain. Shared contacts are visible to all users of an
    Apps domain and all Google services have access to the contact list. To
    retrieve and update Google Apps domain users contact information use the
    Profiles
    API
    instead.

    Your client application can use the Shared Contacts API to create new
    shared contacts, edit or delete existing shared contacts, and query for
    shared contacts that
    match particular criteria.

    In addition to providing some background on the capabilities of the
    Shared Contacts API, this document provides examples of how to
    manipulate contacts using XML and HTTP. After reading this document, you
    may wish to learn more about interacting with the API using our client
    libraries
    by reading the programming-language specific sections of
    this developer's guide.

    Retrieving all shared contacts
    To retrieve the user's contacts, send an HTTP GET

    request to the contacts feed URL. Google then returns a feed containing
    the appropriate contact entries. For example, to get a list of domain
    shared contacts
    for example.com, send the following HTTP request:

    GEThttp://www.google.com/m8/feeds/contacts/...
    The feed then returns an HTTP 200 OK status code and a
    standard Atom 1.0 feed containing the contacts.

    Note: The feed will not return more
    than 10MB in a single response.
    Attempts to do so will result in truncated data. For information on
    limiting the number of results
    returned, see the max-results query parameter in Retrieving
    contacts using query parameters
    . You can retrieve the entire
    contact list by repeatedly following the returned feed's next
    link, until no such link can be found.

    The following is an example of a contacts feed with only one entry.

Google does has a shared address book. Your shared address book pulls together the complete list of accounts in your domain into an easily searchable list of contacts. The update isn’t quite available for all the users in my domain yet, but I can enable contact sharing in my admin console already.
The Shared Address Book makes it even easier to get in touch with everyone in your organization without going to a separate list or company directory. When composing a new email, or sharing a document, you now have the option to search through all the users on your domain, even if they aren’t in your personal contact list. Need to send a note Paula S in Sales, but aren’t sure of her email address? As long as she has a Google Apps account on your organization’s domain, all you have to do is type in the first few letters, "Pau … ", and your address book will help with the rest.

    Thanks. Does the Google Shared Address book limited to only people within the same domain? For instance, my company has 20 external contacts that I want everyone in the domain to have access to. How do I get that accomplished?

    Thanks again.

  • Jayant Jha Jun 06, 2010

    This option is only available for same domain. For other contacts this option is not available.

    Thanks for the information. If Google Apps does not support sharing external contacts across users in the same domain, is that any third party utility that can help for the purpose?

On percent bases how do you figure the share structure of a company?

That depends on the share registry of the company. If it is a public company it would have declared to the stock exchange how many shares are issued. If the company is privately held and not listed on the stock exchange then you will have to seek a full company report from the corporate regulation body that looks after company registrations.

Can you synchronise Outlook 2010 contacts with an iPad?

If you sync with an Exchange server of some kind, your outlook contacts should be synced to that server. If that is the case, add the Exchange server to your iPad under Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar>Add Account. Then, make sure the slider switch beside Contacts is set to 'On'. If you are not connected to an Exchange server, you can always try syncing to another service like Google Contacts and use that service's sync functions to bring the contacts on to your iPad.
Hope this helps, Alistair

I have just got an iPad 32GB. I wish to move all my emails from my PC to the iPad i.e. my Outlook mail folders, all the emails in those folders etc. Can this be done ?

You will need to setup a Exchange mail account on your ipad to receive all the mail and calendar items that you see on your Outlook mail and calendar.
Here is how to add an exchange account:
. From the Home Screen, tap Settings
2. Scroll down and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
3. Select Add Account > Microsoft Exchange.
4. Now type into the following information:

* Email: your email address
* Username: your-Exchange-User-name
* Password: your-mail-password
* Description: It's Optional
* Server: ****.com

For your username, and server names, you will need to contact your company's IT department for the credentials. But your username is the one your IT dept. gives you for email access and password. exchange server name is the server address to access your mail.

Sync problem with Outlook Public calendar

Hi Brad,

By default, it won't sync the company shared calendar. This is in fact very hard to do. You will need to speak the guys in your IT department about a product to sync your calendar with the company one. If you use Exchange server, then you may wish to look towards a product such as 'SlipStick'...
