Canon CanoScan5000/5000F - light bulb out

The light bulb has gone out on my flatbed scanner and it won't come on because of it. My booklet doesn't show how to replace. Can you advise how to get to it and replace it? Do I get the bulb through a Canon dealer?

Thanks for your help!

The light on my 5000F is also out and nothing happens when I power on and press all the buttons. Is the scanner another piece of electronic junk or can I change the bulb cheaply by myself instead of going through an expensive dealer repair?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Scanner appears to have no power or light. How can you test it to determine if it needs a new transformer cord or it is a software problem or it is fryed?

TheComp, I tried what you suggested, but no luck. The scanner is dead. The computer does not even read the scanner through the usb. I called Canon tech support. They tell me that this unit is not serviceable and offered a 20% discount to buy another Canon scanner. No thanks. I don't need another piece of electronic junk. I'll wait for a sale to buy another make. Thanks for your help.

A previous poster stated that this scanner is power through the USB cable. That is false. This scanner has its own AC Power Adapter PA-O8J. There is no power switch for the scanner. As soon as the AC Adapter is connected, then the scanner is powered on.

Are you sure the lamp is out? Disconnect the power cord from the scanner.
Open the scanner lid and leave it open.
Connect the power cord to the scanner.
The lamp under the glass should immediately light up when power is connected. Did it do that? If so, then that lamp is ok. The lamp that is inside the scanner lid (use when scanning film) will only light up when "Film" is selected in the scanner driver. If the "Film" option is not available, then that indicates that the FAU (Film Adapter Unit) is not being detected. Be sure the FAU cable is securely connected from the lid to the base of the scanner.

    Scan12,

Scanners and their bulbs don't normally go bad unless there have been some extreme conditions to cause it, such as power surges, excessive use, etc. If you don't get the light to come on when you plug the scanner in, then the first thing that would come to mind is that the AC Power Adapter might not be functioning. There are a couple of ways to test something like this. Obviously if you have an electrical background and know how to use a volt/ohm meter, you could test the adapter to determine if it is outputting the correct levels. The other way would be to find another canon scanner that uses the same adapter and either test your adapter on that scanner, or test the good adapter on your scanner. Here is a list of a few scanners that use that same adapter.

    D1230UF, D2400UF, D646U, D646Uex, D1250U2, D1250U2F, 3000F, 3000ex, 3200F, 5000F, 8000F, 4200F

So if you know someone who had one of those Canon Scanners, you'll have a way to know for sure if the AC Adapter is working.

If you have to get another scanner though, the CanoScan 8800F is awesome. There's no wait-time when you go to scan. It is ready immediately. Here's a link.

    Good luck.

Your canon scanner power through the usb cable connected to the system. canon doesn't come with an on/off switch which makes it powered on whenever u start the system.
am afraid u need to change the bulb through dealer.

avoid this whole thing by keeping your scanner off the system when not in use.

TheComp,
I had also thought that the problem might be the AC adapter. However, I had not been able to find a matching adapter to test the scanner. I will keep looking. Thanks for your help.

How can I get Canon CanoScan N640P ex Flatbed Scanner to work in Windows 7?

Hi Nubi ,
There is no direct solution since Canon doesn't support your device under Windows 7 .
You can install a virtual version of Xp on your machine with http://download.cnet.com/VMware-Player/3000-2094_4-10470784.html or via Microsoft if you are using Ultimate or Professional .
Otherwise , you will need to purchase a replacement device compatible with Windows 7 .

My scanner's light seems to have gone out; when it scans, there's no light travelling up the flatbed. But also, new problem; it just wont scan, the light wont move at all. Any ideas please?

Try resetting the scanner:
It might be possible to rest the scanner if you power it down, unplug it from both power as well as the computer. Give it a few moments, then power it back up and see how it does. If it's looking like it's reset, go ahead and reattach it to the computer, let it detect/install, then give scanning something a go.
Usually the light going out and never coming back on is a bad sign. Might be worth a try to reinstall the scanner drivers/software on the computer, just to rule out software corruption before declaring the old boy deceased.
Best of luck, William

Canoscan Lide 30 compatibility with Windows 7.

There are no official drivers for CanoScan Lide 30 for Windows XP, so your problem is obvious. I suggest you sending an e-mail at Canon including details about your scanner (date purchased, serial number in text form or scanned) asking them to develop driver set as this model is very trade and at shops since 2006 or 2007.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.

SCANNER DISPLAYING ERROR MESSAGE WHEN TRYING TO SCAN NEGATIVES

the problem can be either of this two 1)the bulb is gone weak. 2)the motor which moves the bulb is gone weak.
and the third and the final thing its very difficult to to manually in this case still have a look. as the rays from the bulb passes from a lens that makes a proper ray.that should be very perfect but if you have removed the bulb and reinserted that that allignment of the passing ray will have moved from its orignal position.
