Question about Computers & Internet

I have 6 split screens on the display

Hi,
I have an Advent 5401 laptop, running Windows Vista Home, which has an nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 256MB graphics chip.

The other day I got a blue screen, and from then on every time I start up the laptop I have 6 split screens on the display. I have tried removing the graphics drivers and using the VGA drivers, but the problem persists. I have tried changing the display (FN + F3) but it stays the same.

However if I start up the laptop in Safe Mode, it shows ok.
Can anyone help please? I am thinking that it could not be the graphics chip, if it looks ok in safe mode.

I don`t know where to go from here.

Many Thanks
Dave.

Hi. Have you tried tweaking the GUI of your Graphics Adapter? try uninstalling the drvier, remove the Graphical User Interface (software/application) from the list of programs and restart the machine. Then re-install the drivers and software from your manufacturer's support website and see what will happen. ^_^

    Hi,
I have removed ALL he graphics drivers, and the problem persists. When i install the Nvidia drvers for the graphics chip, then start up the laptop i do not get anything on the display. At the moment the only graphics drivers i am using is the VGA drivers provided by Windows Vista, and the only way i can get rid of the 6 split screens is to run the laptop in safe Mode. Could this a graphics chip problem, given that the display is ok in safe mode?

    Thanks
    Dave.

    Hi,
All graphics drivers are removed. The only drivers that are running the graphics at the moment are the VGA driveres provided by Windows Vista.

If i install the Nvidia drivers, the laptop will not boot up completely, and i have no display at all. The only way i can get a proper display is to boot it into safe mode. If i do this the display is ok.

Given the the display is ok in safe mode, could the problem be the graphics chip?

    Thanks
    Dave.

This is definitely a failure in your graphics chip. The graphics needs to be reflowed in order for it to function again. Effective fixes are either a new motherboard, or repair existing one. Good company: www.revivemylaptop.com. They can give free advice and fantastic prices I find

    Hi Kashef.

I have the same issue as the above user but mine was like this outside of the OS also. this was after a MBD replacement because of the nvidia defect, so i contacted the company that i purchesed it from and they then sent me another MBD, still the issue persists. i am stripping the screen down now and reseating all connectors but i honestly don't think that it will resolve the issue.

Please, any further suggestions would be much appreciated

Hi Chris, I have repaired hundreds of these laptops before with the same issue and it has always been the motherboard. The problem did occur outside of Windows too. I also experienced that repaired boards failed ever so quickly. Maybe the repairer was rubbish? I don't know! But on some occasions up to 5 motherboards changed on one unit in order to get a working one. However, the boards that I changed often had different symptoms too, not consistently the same. So I would suggest looking at possible other affected hardware too such as the LCD cable. It very rarely causes an issue to be honest, but its the closest thing to have failure and its the cheapest also. Try this, and if it doesnt work, then maybe the LCD itself. There is nothing else that can cause this issue at all. 99% of cases it is the motherboard which has been proven on the hundreds that I have repaired. Hope this information helps. Drop another comment should you have any further queries. Kash
