Question about Televison & Video

I have a RCA HD52W59 projection TV. The red gun is shooting a bowed (think bow-tie) picture. convergence won't fix it. It was a sudden failure. Which board needs work? r-CRT board? green and blue are fine.

Hi,

It certainly sounds like a convergance board issue - very common in older RPTVs.

The convergence of the three color guns is controlled by a pair (sometimes three) convergence ICs (integrated circuits). You can't miss these if you look inside your TV. They are huge and mounted to big heat sinks.

What normally happens is they fail due to heat, sometimes at the joints, and take a few other components with it.

To have this repaired by a pro will likely run you $250-$400.

You can do it yourself for about $50 in parts and a couple of hours of labor. I should be able to provide the part numbers and you can go for it if you feel adventurous and have access to some basic tools and a soldering iron.

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

From my view, it seems like whatever controls the vertical deflection on the red gun is whacked (maybe with a blown cap??) The picture is there, but bow-tied. Horizontal convergence appears ok. (Of course, now I ahev a compuonded issue that I removed the board with the flyback coil and will have to repair the HV lead wire. Shall I pull the convergence board?

    Thanks for your response!!

But, this is an issue with ONLY Red, then it could just be a pico fuse or other small
component in the signal path.No doubt this is an issue with Convergence Board. Pull out the Board and see, if you could find any fault.

This problem is usually caused by aging components but variations and spikes in voltage could contribute to the longevity of your components.

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

    Hope i helped you.

I have puuled the convergengce board.
Initially, comparative resistance to ground at the trnsistor leads between RV, RH, and GV are consistant. All transistors appear to have proper gate and reverse gate properties.
    What do you suggest?
( I am thinking caps, but I have no equipment to measure capacitance in line. (or out of circuit for that matter.) Am I correct in thinking that a nonlinearity issue in the Red Vertical circuit is the culprit?

Hi: there are some small micro fuses on the deflecton board that has opened replace these fuses should return the set to normal, you man need to only replace one. Also these fuses open because of bad connections around the flyback transformer so after replacing the fuses resolder the area around the transformer and any related componetes in this area.. The board you need to check is the Deflection power board it's the board on the left of the set looking from the back. the fuses are at the back of the board nearest you they may be green or yellow in color...do a continuity check on each on to determine which one is open. meter should give a contionus beep when one is good not when its not.

    Thanks..
I will check it out. That was what I suspected. Thank you for further describing the fuse locations.

  • dherde Jun 06, 2010

I see three red fuses next to the flyback transformer. None are blown.FL221,FL231 and FL251. Ratings are 1.25, 1.25 and .4 amps. Do I need to desolder to check? I suspect not, but... They are all reading 0 ohms. Is there another I should be looking at?

No you do not need to unsolder them to check them a countinity check will do this, If all fuses are good then check all the solder connections on the flyback transformer. If after you check them and they all are good then the next step is the check the convergence board, replacing this board may or may not solve your problem, but it is the next step. you can find replacement boards rebuilt from lots of sources as new ones are probably no longer avaiable. The convergence board is mounted above the deflection on the left side of the television by itself. Check the supply voltages to this board to make sure the deflection board is supplying correct voltages...

I have an RCA HD52W59 HDTV and my kids were watching the other day and all of a sudden the screen went bad. The sound is ok and you can still see the picture however it looks like your watching in 3D...

This is normally an easy fix. I've fixed several of these. When you get the back off of the set, there are 3 small square brown fuses located at the back left corner of the set, if looking at it from the back. They are located next to the right side of the flyback transformer( the large gray or black thing sticking up with the thick red wire coming out of the top). One of those fuses will be open and needs to be replaced, and the pins on the flyback transformer need to be resoldered on the bottom of the board. They will come loose and make the fuse blow. This will fix the problem 95% of the time on this set.

I have a RCA R56WH78YX53 tv that made a pop or click noise and now the picture is bowed and the colors look like you need 3D glasses. I tried to do a convergence but the tv went blank and now it will not...

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Hi I have a rca hd52w59. the top half of the

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Try adjusting the convergence in the customer menu. If you can't adjust the colors then you may need to have convergence amplifiers. A professional can do this. Check around for price.

you have lost convergence. First thing to check is to see if you are missing the convergence option in the customer setup menu. if you do not have this option then i suggest reading the article in the tips and tricks section entiltled "the fl231 fuse problem" this is a common and sometime easy repair if you do have it then you might need a convergence power board

THis set is notorus..bad to converge ...here at the shop seting the convergence takes up alot of my time... you may have to get a technician to converge in factory or service model.. this is something a non tech should not due "you can mess it up good" there may be a convergence amplifer board problem too. suggest getting a tech to chech it out. IF you can converge at all is a good sign that it might just be adjustment. average repair for this is 100 to 200

Check your screen. I have the same problem with mine. If the screen has a ripple in it, it could give the same effect.
