Hayward sand filter allowing dirty water to come through

1) Make sure that you have thoroughly backwashed the sand.
2) Make sure your chemical balances are correct
3) Remove filter canister top valve and insure that it was properly seated on the filters canisters center pipe.
4) Remove all sand from the filter canister
4) Clean all components thoroughly
5) Check for cracked laterals or plumbing
6) Repair or replace any bad or missing components
7) Reassemble

Tip: carefully use a rubber mallet to seat the canister valve by lightly tapping on and about the circumference of the valves seat.

Hope this helps,

When backwashing...sand discharges out backwash hose..

A little sand in backwash is not uncommon. Many packaged sand filter systems use pumps whose flow rates greatly exceed the flow capacity of the filter.(the more horsepower the better, right? - Wrong) If this occurs only during back flush the the pump is too strong or the sand level is above the beginning of the rounded top of tank. The sand level will eventually correct itself.

Sand Leaking From Filter into Pool. When my filter is running I am experiencing sand in the bottom of my pool from the filter. What can be causing that?

There is only one thing that can cause sand to come back into the pool from a sand filter. The internal assembly, called the lateral assembly, is either cracked or broken. This is an easy fix and should cost you around $70 to replace the whole thing. You need to unscrew the bottom drain cap on the filter to remove the water in the tank. Then, remove the multiport valve on top of the filter. Take a shop vac and remove the sand in the filter. If the sand hasn't been replaced in the last 3-5 years, this would be a great time to do that since you already have the sand out anyway. Then, remove the lateral assembly and inspect the entire thing. After you replace the lateral assembly, you'll need to fill the sand filter tank 1/2 full of water before adding fresh sand. This is done to cushion the laterals from the weight of the sand. Cover the hole in the top of the lateral assembly pipe with a cup or duct tape to prevent any sand from getting inside the pipe (the sand will come out into the pool if it gets into the pipe). Fill the tank 3/4 full of pool filter sand. Make sure it is genuine silica pool filter sand from a pool company. A lot of big box and home improvement stores sell play sand as filter sand. This will cause you more problems!

I have a hayward sand filter, and there is a hair line crack, on the side of the valve on top. I fixed the crack with some epoxy, but it doesn't seem to be filtering the water, its still dirty. If I...

You more than likely fused the internal valve components and it stuck in a awkward position not allowing any of the processes to work you will need to replace valve assembly to correct problem.

I have a S21OT sand filter that is running off the pressure guage and flowing sand back into the pool. The laterals are fine, I changed the sand, backwashed for about two minutes, and rinsed, The pressure...

Usually sand blowing back into the pool is either cracked laterals, a cracked hub assembly (what the laterals screw into) or a bad spider gasket is wrong with pool filters. If you are certain that the laterals and hub are not cracked then I would try replacing the spider gasket.

How to change the sand in the filter

Backwash the filter, drain water from motor etc., remove the dome on the top of the filter. I usually use a shop vac and vac the sand out, not overloading the vac. When all the sand is removed, check the laterals and piping in the filter for cracks, etc. I like to spread washed pea gravel or small rock under the laterals to help support them. Then add about 6 inches of water in the filter. Be sure to get sand of the right grade for a sand filter. Fill it with the recommended amount of sand, smoothing it to keep it level and around all fittings. Do Not fill the filter all the way. There needs to be space between the sand and the top laterals. Close the filter with the dome and be sure to inspect the o-ring on the dome. Put the backwash valve in the backwash position and backwash till clear. Put the valve on "filter" and open the air release valve on the top of the filter to bleed the air and start the pump. The pool may cloud a little but don't worry about it. It will clear as the sand compacts. It is a very labor intensive job...

Pool filter problem

You have a problem ...

Can you see the little tube that bleeds air out of the return pipe? If not ... see if you can find it and get it to the top of the filter.

Still have sand? You may have a cracked lateral ... remove the sand and check all the laterals. Replace any that are broken.

When you refill the sand ... be sure to put water in first to soften the beating the laterals take from the falling sand.

I have a Hayward sand filter and the top is cracked and leaks. When I patch it, it just cracks somewhere else

those tanks are designed to hold alot of pressure. If it is cracked, it's already unsafe. When the pump turns on, the tanks usually flex a little bit, depending on your system. The flexing usually makes the patch come undone. It's best, and safer, to replace the filter tank.

Dirt passes thru filter when cleaning, but there is no sign of any sand particals bypassing,is there a seal between the top peice and the pipe ?

There is an o-ring in the filter head, That seals the standpipe (the pipe) to the filter head. (top piece) My advice would be to take a nylon stocking and wrap it around the eyeball or discharge in the pool. Let the filter run. If you start getting large size debris back into the pool, it's usually the standpipe not being connected to the head properly or the o-ring is missing.. If you are getting a lot of sand, the problem might be the standpipe or lateral assembly.

Pool Sand Filter

The volume of a 24x4 pool is 1809.6 cubic feet [Volume=pi x radius squared x height, or V=3.14159 x(12x12)x4], and the 18 foot pool is 1017.9 cubic feet [V=3.14159 x (9x9)x4]. When you multiply the number of cubic feet by the conversion factor of 7.48 gallons per cubic foot, you come out with 13,536 gallons versus 7614 gallons. Since the volume is nearly double, I don't think the other filter will cut it for very long. Is the top that is cracked in the valve body or the top part of the tank? It might be cheaper and easier to just replace the defective part in the long run than to use an undersized filter that will die prematurely.
