How to get to the fuel filter on a Poulan 2150 Chainsaw

Saw your May 20th response to the Poulan 2150. I am trying to get to my fuel filter becasue I think it is my problem. The problem being it starts and runs for a short time then quits and doesn't restart unless I let it set for awhile. Changed the plug, cleaned the air filter, put in a fresh oil/gas mix and it made no difference. Am thinking it's a fuel problem but can't seem to figure out how to get to the fuel filter. I've taken the top off and can see where the fuel lines run but can't seem to see the fuel filter or figure out how to get to it. I'm sure it's something obvious but I need it pointed out to me -- thanks -- Kirt

A blunted hooked rod through the fuel filler hole should snag the fuel hose. Draw it slowly toward the opening and a filter should become obvious on the free end. The manufacturer recommends an annual replacement.

It sounds to me like your fuel vent may be plugged. How long does it run before it starves out? If rotating the saw and loosening the cap causes it to operate correctly it is a bad vent. If it starves in less than a minute it is likely a defective fuel delivery hose or outside chance a leak in an impulse line somewhere.

If you have more questions or need additional help please reply below and I will get back to you. HTH & Good Luck.

Remove the fuel cap entirely and empty the fuel out. Look inside with a flashlight and you should see the filter hanging on a section of fuel line in the rear of the tank plus another shorter unfiltered line hanging near the front. Use a hooked wire to catch the filter/line and bring it out to the opening. Remove the filter and inspect the condition of the line (if bad, plan on replacing at least that section of line and only use original type line, not plastic). If the filter will pass air easily, it will allow fuel to flow as well. If cleaning or replacing a clogged filter doesn't help, check all of the carburetor fasteners for tightness. If there is a flexible coupling of the carburetor to the engine, make sure that it is not cracked/damaged and leaking air. By your description, it is not pumping in new fuel to replace what the primer brought in. Check the muffler for plugging--what comes in must get out! Hope this helps!

I HAVE POULAN 2150 CHAINSAW IT WILL CRANK WITH CHOKE PULLED OUT IN ON POSITION BUT SOON AS I PUSH CHOKE IN TO OFF POSITION SAW CUTS OFF . I REPLACED FUEL LINES AND TANK FILTER AND PRIMER BULB

Try testing it with a known good carb. The float and needle may be worn out. Since it starts, it is obviously a fuel problem and not an electronic one. Or if you have the means, buy a new carb.

Poulan 2150 chain saw starts and dies after 5 seconds or so then wont start

Try a few easy things first, hook the fuel hose out of the fuel tank through the filler hole and replace the filter on the end, follow the fuel hoses up to the carb and check foe any signs of fuel leakage, replace the affending hose if cracked.

Poulan 2150 chain saw starts after priming and dies after a few seconds

Take the exhaust off so you can see the side of the piston, if it is scored or damaged it means it has probably been run without oil added to the petrol.
That can cause the problems you are having, if it is throw it away, its not worth repairing

Diagram for fuel line routing for a poulan 2150 chainsaw?

The 2150 has a remote primer, so there will be three pipes, the pipe coming from the fuel tank with the fuel filter on the end is the main fuel tube, this fits to the connection on the carb nearest to the pump cover on the carb ( alluminium cover held with a single screw ) the other connection on the carb has a pipe to the shorter of the two connections on the back of the primer ( suction side ) the longer connection on the back of the primer ( pressure side ) has a pipe back to the fuel tank, so the primer pulls fuel from the tank, into the bulb, and dumps it back to the tank, it does not push fuel into the carb, this way you can depress the bulb as many times as you like without flooding the engine.

Poulan 2150 - starts and stops almost immediately

Is the saw setting 'fast idle' when starting? Does the primer pump fill with fuel when pumped several times? Is the fuel mix fresh? Have you checked the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging? Inspect the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Check the carburetor fasteners for tightness. Hope this helps!

I have a Poulan 2150 2.1 chainsaw. I have no manuals. All of the fuel lines are dry-rotted and need to be replaced. How can I do this myself?

An IPL containing fuel system parts with very little detail can be found here:
Poulan.com
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/POULAN-WEED-EATER/75.59.html

“2150 Gas Saw Type #” (the dash number from your serial number). May also be Predator or Woodsman.
The fuel system parts can be found on the "Engine Assembly" and "Handle & External Assembly" illustrations.
Take good notes and a some digital photos with as much undisturbed detail of hoses and routing as possible.
Try your local chainsaw seller/mechanic for fuel hose. Take a short length sample, there may be different size hoses. All need be fuel resistant.

  • The hose in the tank with the filter on the free end connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
  • If the saw is equipped with a primer bulb, the output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill the bulb as it inflates).
  • The pressure side of the primer returns displaced fuel to the tank as it is depressed.
Take lots of notes and a few digital photographs will help with reassembly. HTH

This is as good as fuel routing gets!!! If this isn't sufficient Find your nearest Poulan repair facility or try your friendly neighborhood chainsaw seller/mechanic. Resubmitting this question won't get any better answer. HTH
