If you are trying to use it on AT&T then you need to get an unlock code. Try here: http://www.cellunlocker.net
When you enter code it should continue on to Google signup screen. Before you press on the Android logo, click on the Menu button. Then follow the APN settings at: http://www.blogsdna.com/2357/how-to-unlock-t-mobile-g1-phone.htm (Scroll down til you see the AT&T settings.)
Then you should see the EDGE icon at top right.
Now you can setup/sign in to your Google account.
Cheers

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

Here's a link to this great service

Good luck!

Call up tmobile, do not tell them you have a rooted phone or that it was modified in anyway, otherwise they will blame it. They will be able to help you get it working by modifying / adding some settings in your phone.

Received G1 replacement phone i put my existing SIM card into the replacement and in the notifications bar it says SD card removed, insert new one. the SIM card works fine in my current G1

Sounds like you are replacing the SD card, not the SIM card. The SIM is underneath the battery. It's a small white rectangle missing a corner.

Android not reading my SIM card - no internet, though phone works

Did you know if your G1 is unlocked?
Seeing that you're using AT&T, this may be the issue. So once you have your G1 unlocked, everything should be breezy.

Reset G1

Hi, I had that problem. I first verified that my TMobile internet was activated on my account and on my SIM card by putting the card in another phone and connecting to the 'net on it. Then I found the APN setting on the G1 and I changed the APN at the heading "T-Mobile US" from the new 3G APN "epc.tmobile.com" to the older APN "internet2.voicestream.com". The APNs can be accessed on your still-locked phone by pushing the "Menu" button at the sign-in screen. Scroll down to "T-Mobile US", select it and change "epc.tmobile.com" to "internet2.voicestream.com", exit by pushing the left-arrow button a few times, then re-enter your GMail info. If the "Edge" icon has appeared in the menu bar area, then you're golden!
