It only does this with one movie it plays all other movies fine. To see if it was the movie itself i tried it in a friends player & it worked. if it matters it is a store bought movie not a copy or anything & it is "Descent" the movie. & when i first bought the movie it worked fine.

Thats what i am afraid this is a fairly new unit I am completely disappointed in the volume itself as it is not as loud or good quality as other surround sound units of equal wattage & now it picks my FAVORITE movie to be the only movie it refuses to play & i think paying to get it serviced would be a waste of money thanks

Your problem is with the Cd, if i am right, the Cd must be old or was made a copy from other source without proper speed, or scratched etc... Please check it on a computer Dvd/Cd -Rom. If it can be read, then try to copy one file. You'll see the result. Please check and make sure that there's no physical damage like scratch on the back or any kind oil stained traces. Good luck Thanks for using FixYa.

You are right, but we need to verify one thing. Please try to copy it on the computer, possibly the Last file if the Cd has multiple files content in it. Even if we can play most corrupted cds can't copy, and so different cd/dvd roms has different capacity to read or to write. You'll get an error message like "unable to copy" or "the source file cannot be read" etc... I'll assist you further. Good luck.

Your problem is the small switch that a small boss hits when the doors closed to tell the unit the door is closed.. Its ether the small boss is broken from the door or the switch blades cracked. If you feel comfortable to open small electronics you may be able to open and see if it is the tiny switch BUT highly NOT recommended as there are micro fine wires and ribbon cables inside this unit that can be easily broken.Best thing to do is to take or send this unit to an authorized repair shop.

Well if that is the case then how come it still plays movies it is only one movie it will not play i watch movies on it all the time but when i put this one movie in it does what i described, a friend put the movie in her player to see if it was the movie itself & it worked fine.

How to get unit to play without remote

You can probably use the front panel buttons (STOP PLAY OPEN/CLOSE etc) manually, the only thing you cannot do without the remote is access certain DVD menus, including subtitles/language/special features etc. You can always obtain and use a universal remote for basic menu functions later on if necessary.

To play a DVD movie without the remote, simply load your preferred disc, wait for the player to finish reading its contents, then to skip copyright warnings and/or the 'play movie' menu screen, press STOP, then PLAY, or simply press PLAY button where 'play movie' (or whatever function) is highlighted in the menu. These buttons should be on the front of the main unit. Doing this should encourage the player to detect the appropriate title (the movie) and play it (basic playback operation may not be possible with some DVD releases due to the numerous interactive menus and title pages, such as film trailers).

If basic manual operation is not completely possible with some DVD titles, consider a universal remote for your player if you have either lost your original, or the player was purchased/received without one. Such remotes are relatively inexpensive to purchase, and are available just about everywhere.

HOW DO I TYPE NAMES OF CD OR DVD ?

You can't add a title to a disc from a player (such as this). You can only add a title on a disc writer before finishing the disc. (The only exception is RW (rewritable) disc which can be unfinished.) If a title (disc, chapter or track) is on the disc you can display it. Press Title on the remote. If you want to read all of the information on any disc, insert the disc and press Load on the player (when in Stop mode) or press the TV/DiscExplorer/DVD button to set the unit in Disc Explorer mode. It takes about 30 seconds to load the data. Press Stop to cancel the data search. Then use the folder buttons (ALL,DVD,CD,A,B,C,D) on the remote or the player to read the various items. Press Return to leave the folders. If you enter the Disc Explorer while playing a disc, the playback will stop and you will have to press Play to restart (Resume is not an available option).

Once loaded the player will store the data even after you remove the disc. It will clear when a new disc is inserted or you press Load.

The manual for this unit is available at: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DVPCX850D .

I hope this helps.

Won't read newly released blueray dvd's, Ithe model I have is BD-HP20U with version HU7103100. Do I need new firmware?

No firmware is available yet. In the meantime follow these directions for a possible work around...

You need to force the player to the the Top Menu of the disc.
The way to do this is: load disc, wait until it says "Reading Completed" (about 1 minute).

Wait for the PLAY icon ">" to show in the upper right corner (this may take up to 30-40 secs).

Once you see the ">" Hit the STOP button on the remote to get to the player's splash screen.

From the Sharp splash screen Hit the "Top Menu/Title List" button on the remote and wait for the circulating dots and then the disc menu appears.
Play the movie from the menu and you should be good to go.

Playing recordable dvd

My Emerson won't play anything except DVD Movies, never has, wasn't suppose too. Make your movies in DVD Video format and it will read them fine (unless it's broke). I make movies all the time and play them back in mine. It reads DVD-R, DVD+R, and in duel layered. It will not read RW disks!

Man I've every problem you can imagine with DVD Players. I've found when the disk gets stuck, as long as it's not jammed. You can turn the unit off or unplug it. Plug it back in but DON'T TURN IT ON! Instead hit the eject button and the drive should open the drive without trying to read the disk.
