It does sound there is a problem with the hard drive. However if you hit F12 at boot you will get an option to run the system diag on the computer. Let me know the error you get and I can tell you where the problem is.

If it is not keeping time then you need to replace the computers clock battery. The battery is a cr2032 battery usually.
follow the below link for instructions on how to do that.

Press F2 to enter the system setup. Someone or something (Bad Motherboard battery most likely) has reset the BIOS defaults, which includes the Floppy diskette drive controller to be ON. Set Diskette Drive to NONE, then under integrated Devices, set diskette controller to off, save settings and reboot
(ALT + B)

if issue re-occurs then the watch battery on motherboard is bad and needs to be replaced

Everytime we boot up our computer it says press f1 to do something and f2 to enter setup mode?

generally an indication that something is wrong in the system setup. Press F2 and enter setup, check the time and date settings and the system event log (If BIOS has one) for incorrect settings, also check and see if the BIOS shows a hard drive installed.

If time and are wrong, set them to correct and save settings. If system keeps losing time and date after power is removed, then the backup battery may need to be replaced.

If HDD is not detected, then reseat it. If still not detected replace it.

RAM installation

Hi hunter555,

First off, you've done a lot of work for nothing. What you need to do is put back the new memory. When the Dell Bios boots, it confirming that it has detected the new memory. What you need to do is hit the F1 key to reboot and continue on to the XP installation. When you open the case, it will say the same thing. Don't worry about it, it's only confirming that the case was opened. Typically, I shut off the case intrusion detection, only because I'm always adding things to the machines and it's just a extra step I have to take to boot. However, it's good to know that your bios is confirming that you've opened the case, and that you've put in new memory. You want to make sure that the setup recongizes the entire memory in the banks. So, go to the system information page and make sure that it's reading the original and the additional memory 256k you added. Otherwise your done.

Good Luck
