First make sure you have 240 between red and black. If you look real close the dryers wiring is red white and black on the terminals. I like to put red to red, black to black, and white to white, but that is just me. The dryer runs on 120 volts and it is the white and black side. If you don't have 120 volts between that white neutral middle wire and black then she won't run. The heater is a 5000 watt 240 volt one. It uses both the red and black circuits to get power. The fuse is on the back side.

I need to change my 3 prong to a 4 prong

Unplug the dryer then remove the terminal block cover and disconnect the 3-prong cord from the dryer. Note that the cord has red , black, and white wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can switch places. There's also a ground strap wire also connected to the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire.

Get yourself a 4-prong cord and note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes, like the 3-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect the 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 3-prong cord to the terminal block. The ground strap wire now just need to be connected to the remaining 4th wire, the green/yellow wire instead of the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire. Reinstall the terminal block cover and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4 whereas, on the other hand, converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3.. I have a four prong clothes dryer plug that needs to go in a three prong outlet - 220v. Any ideas?

It's either you convert the 3-prong outlet to 4-prong or the 4-prong cord to 3-prong. But the latter is easier and more feasible. Unplug the dryer then disconnect the 4-prong cord from the dryer. Note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray. The red and black wires are lines L1 and L2 reversibly, meaning they can switch places, while the white and green/yellow wires are the neutral line and ground, respectively.

Get yourself a 3-prong cord and note that it has red , black, and white wires but sometimes, like the 4-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect these 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 4-prong cord to the terminal block. The wire strapped to the dryer cabinet and connected to the green/yellow wire of the 4-prong cord wire is now left hanging. The last step is to connect this hanging strap wire to the same terminal on the terminal block (center) where the white wire (neutral) is connected and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3. On the other hand, converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4. Electric Dryer Prong Conversion

My dryer's power cord has 4 prongs, my wall socket has 3 holes, can I change the power cord, or is there an adapter to change from 4 to 3 pronges.

Un screw the 2 hex screws from the back of the dryer where the cord goes in.

There will be 3 screws that connect the cord to the dryer, loosen or remove them to remove the 4 prong cord.

A hardware store will carry the 3 prong cord you need, tell them it is for a dryer.

Re-connect the 3 prong cord to the dryer.

Plug in and test after you have installed the new cord.

Can you tell me how to hookup the three wires of 3 prong cord to the back of dryer that came with 4 wires(4 prong)? Which one goes where? I only have 3 prong plugs at my house. Thank you.

The following link explains how to connect a power cord to your appliance:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r793520-3_prong_4_prong_power_cord_conversion

Now keep in mind, some newer appliances REQUIRE a 4-prong plug in order to work properly. You may consider having a four-prong outlet installed to accomodate your dryer.

You can try these steps by referring to to section that discusses converting from a 4-prong to a 3-prong power cord.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

The 4 prong to a three prong..here goes it its a cord that is 1-2-3 all facing the u that connects them, old cord off new cord on 1-2-3 one to white one to red one to black same order ...the man a t sears...

If I understand you are using the 3 prong cord now. The L shaped prong is the middle one or white. The 2 flat ones are for the red and the black. If tho original cord was 4 prong there was a ground (round prong). There should be a ground strap connecting the white post to the cabinet in the 3 post setup. Ask me to clarify if this is not clear, better to be sure than hurt..... Eric

If you had a wire incorrect it may have blown a fuse or worse depending on which wire was wrong.
