Question about Sony 42XBR900 Television

1 Answer

My Sony 42"XBR900 has developed vertical bands from the top of the screen to the bottom. I am practically unable to view programming on this display. Technicians have estimated $3G to repair. Is there a less expensive or do-it-yourself fix? I am technically proficient but have never taken a plasma apart...

The thing with plasmas is they're never really worth the money you end up spending on them. LCDs are a good alternative and are easier to fix. Plasmas are crazy on the inside and require specialized training to even understand, let alone be qualified to work on one.
The sony support site doesn't seem to recognize that model, so I'm not sure what your options are. If you don't want to pay the estimated cost, then maybe you could play around with the settings and make it watchable, even if just to sell it off.
Another alternative is to sell it for parts and buying a more reliable, and less expensive, TV type like LCD or CRT.

Why does my TV show discolored vertical bands and can I fix it at home?

The T-con board controls the picture elements on the screen. Usually replacing this board will solve the problem. If you can touch the screen and the lines disappear and later reappear, that says the screen itself is defective. The only fix is to replace the entire screen.

Hi have a samsung 42 inch plasma, all of a sudden it has a band 20cm wide of dotted lines going across the whole screen, some channels or when playstation in use the band gets wider, does not seem to...

if the band is horizontal your tv has bad y-buffer board. Usually there are 2 buffer boards- top and bottom. if the problem is in the top half of the screen replace the top board, otherwise replace bottom board.
but better to replace both a the same time.

if the tv has a vertical lines from top to bottom it may have bad plasma panel and can be considered as not economical to repair.

Brownish band across top of screen

Please press the WIDE button on the remote repeatedly to remote the Bands. If the issue persists, you may need to change the Aspect ratio to 4:3 on the Video source that you have connected to the TV. Check the link for more info:
