SOURCE: I have a lx 255 john deere wont start

You have a defective ignation coil. When the engine gets hot, the winding in the coil opens and the engine stops. After it cools down, it will again make contact and start again. If you don't know where the coil is, follow the wire from the spark plug. The spark plug wire is attached to the coil from the factory. It's easy to replace with a 1/4 inch socket set. Set the magnet to coil gap with a standard business card.

If engine cranks over and have no spark try a time delay module located under thermostat housing.

Can someone guide me through troubleshooting this ie which safety switches to check etc.

try a new spark plug. they breakdown over time. if still no spark unplug the wire under the coil. if it does not have spark now replace the coil. if it does have spark you have a bad switch somewhere.

John deere tractor has no spark eng is fb460. i put a new spark plug and a new coil still no spark

Make sure you set the gap properly on the coil should be a filler gauge 10. Make sure the flywheel is clean at the firing point. And make sure there are no safety switches that have gone bad. Safety switch that go bad will cause a break in the circuit and will prevent the coil from allowing spark.

I have a stx 38 john deere and put on a new coil and have no spark at the plug

1. make sure the spark plug lead is connected to the plug
2. check the condition of the plug and make sure its properly gapped
3. test for spark plug making sure engine ignition switch, key switch, or kill switch is in the run position
4. crank and observe

if that doesnt work check where the coil attatches to the engine for rust buildup or moisture. if that is the case clean surface area and let dry in warm dry area for 4-6 hours and try again

Lack of Spark

If all of your tests are correct, the thing remaining is the ignition coil. A bit of a pain to get at and expensive too. Parts diagram here. Before you buy a new coil, see if there might be just a broken spark wire or loose connection at the spark plug contact end.

I don't have spark on my john deere x324 tractor. It was fine the last time I used it. I thought the safety switch for the seat. I made a jumper and no spark. What other switches would cut out the spark?...

X 300 series had 2 known problems. One is the delay module under dash has been an issue scince model came out,it's the first thing I replace when I have one that comes in with no spark. The second issue is the coil grounding/kill wires have a diode in them and when one diode goes bad the engine will only have spark to the strongest coil.If you lost spark to both coils and machine still cranks I would replace the delay module under center of dash.

ok, since you have the points, I assume you have the B43g Onan
engine. Was it running before the new parts were installed?
Check your point gap and make sure it is .016, plugs ahould be gapped at .025 Make sure your plug wires are good too. Should be somewhere between 0 and 10,000 ohms per foot, when measured with an ohmmeter. Once everything is rechecked for gap distance, make sure there is no spark by pulling plug out, leaving wire on and ground the outside of plug to the chassis of the tractor.
Crank over and look for the spark. Coils are about $100, so you want to eliminate everything else first.
Diagnosing a points ignition for no spark is really simple. Do you have 12V at the coil? Do you get a spark when you connect and disconnect the negative terminal of the coil to ground? If not you have a bad coil.
