Question about NEC MultiSync VT590 LCD Projector

1 Answer

The projector is an NEC model VT590 and is connected to my computer for use with a SMARTBoard. In the bottom left hand corner a pink colour is starting to grow inwards. In the upper left hand corner, there is an intense pink colour and in the upper right hand corner, an intense yellow colour. Yesterday, it seems like a very light pink is showing up blotchy like all over the middle. I tried a direct hook up to my computer to make sure it was not the cable and the problem remained. We then tried a different lamp and the colour is still there. What could be the problem and how can I fix it?

It is not the smartboard, lamp or the computer as well know, it's the projector itself. This may not work but you at least need to try press the auto adjust button on the projector and then adjust the clock/phase in the menu. If not you will need to send in to NEC it could by the color wheel. Usually they have a warranty for a couple of years.

These use a high voltage discharge bulb and there is no easy way to test them. The power ballast could be tested but that takes a special meter.

There is a blue glow in the bottom left hand corner of the image

I have had this problem with projectors unfortunately can't quite remember the exact problem. It will get worse though as it is wear and tear. Its either a polarising lens or the lcd panel is burnt out. I have had them repaied in the past but could cost at least £300. You can buy very good spec NEC projectors for just over £200. That is new and including the lamp. I recently bought 7x NEC NP115. They are great value for money, 3000hor lamp life and new lamps are abought £120.

Hope that is helpful to you

I have a nec vt590 projector. When you watch a movie. A big spot appears in the center of the screen. I believe one of the three lcd panels that is attached to the lense has overheated and is distorting...

If it is a bluish colour then the organic polarizer plate that allows the blue light to pass through it to the blue lcd panel is burnt due to old age.
If the spot is made up of pixel shaped spots rather than a blurred area, then perhaps the lcd panel is faulty, but this is less frequently the case.
You could disconnect the power cable and remove the cover and look at the optics parts to check where any overheated parts can be found.
Then you can be certain which bits to replace.
Another option is to buy a faulty VT590 unit off ebay for a fraction of the price and have a go at swapping the parts between the units.
The lcd panels can be removed and replaced, but require precision alignment and you need the extender cables to be able to do it successfully. So give that a miss, replace the whole lcd prism assembly as one item.
Hope this helps.

Nec projector vt590 doesn't project RED

Red, Green, and Blue signals come from different wires in the VGA cable.  This sometimes happens if a cable simply is not connected fully.  But it will also happen if the cable is damaged.  The damage might be visible in the form of a bent, broken, or missing pin.  Or it might be internal to the cable.
Try another cable.
If that's not it, then the connector on either your computer or on the projector itself might be damaged.
Also try another computer.
Components inside the projector could also fail.  But I'd bet on a cable problem any day.

Hi DianeMcF

There is only two things that could cause a pink colour to appear on your screen.

Try using a different cable - which I'm sorry to say - I doubt will fix the problem.

This is most probably a LCD that will have to be replaced , and do take my word for it that this is not something you would want to replace yourself as it is extrememly difficult and a very delicate process not to harm the other LCD's.

Pink tint when usig the RGB component cable

Check the green signal lead - if one of the RGB leads doesn't make good contact, the picture will take on an odd tint that doesn't always look like it's missing one of those colours. For some reason, the green is always the most common one to fail.
