Probably a broken or loose lateral in the bottom of the filter. Do you backwash a lot? One thing you might try if the lateral isn't too damaged is let it run for a day, vacuum the sand out of the pool and see if it stops. If this works, good. But the next time you backwash, you will have to do it again

Sand shooting back in pool

If you took "Pump" apart, you wouldn't have found broken laterals. You will need to open up the "Filter" to find laterals. If sand is ending up in the pool, you either have a broken component within the filter or you have an overfilled filter tank and during backwash sand is lifted up into the valve, and upon returning valve position back to "Filter" the residual is blown back to pool via the return inlet. If this is the case that is why always follow label / owners manual directions as to Quantity of media to add. More is not necessarily always better!

Why is sand shooting back into pool

Inside the sand filter there are laterals that are PVC pipes with many narrow slots along their length. If a lateral is broken then sand will not be stopped by the lateral. Another possibility is that the part these laterals screw into is broken and sand leaks through. I hope this helps.

I have a Dreamline sand filter by hayward... it is shooting all debris dright back into pool. It works to put it on waste but not the filter function. Also, if we backwash it is still clean. i havent had...

If the pool filter is blowing sand and debris back into the pool, it is most likely due to backpressure. This is cause by air in the lines. You most likely have a crack somewhere in your system. Start by checking all of your connections and plumbing with your filter and pump. Then start checking your pipes, etc.

Just installed a hayward pump and followed directions on the pump having problems when we tried to backwash it shoots sand into the pool

Backwash should put no water back into the pool. It should be sending filter dirt to a waste line. Maybe your lines are incorrectly installed?
Secondly, under normal conditions, sand does not go to backwash waste either. Could there be too much sand in the filter?

When turning pump on sand shoots into pool app. two seconds.replaced diverter and lateral coponents. still does the same thing. twm 19 inch p/n 520-1910

If you don't have a manual you can download one here:
http://www.waterwayplastics.com/manuals/810-0092H.0209.pdf
Are you sure you didn't damage laterals when adding sand. Best to have 1/4 water in filter as you add sand. Be sure o ring is in place in multiport valve that fits on downtube.Be sure down pipe is not too low to enter multiport valve. The pipe should fit snugly into the multiport valve o ring. Be sure you have correct sand (pool filter sand only) IF all this is ok, try backwashing till glass is clear. Run on rinse position for a few min. THen go back to filter and see if it still pumps in sand.

Pool filter problem

You have a problem ...

Can you see the little tube that bleeds air out of the return pipe? If not ... see if you can find it and get it to the top of the filter.

Still have sand? You may have a cracked lateral ... remove the sand and check all the laterals. Replace any that are broken.

When you refill the sand ... be sure to put water in first to soften the beating the laterals take from the falling sand.
