Sounds like your contactor is sticking in your outside unit. They could be welded shut.

Is the fan on the outside unit supposed to turn when the heat is on or only for the air conditioner? Our unit is omitting a strange odor and the fan will not move even if we switch the unit to air...

The outside fan is used when ever the compresser needs to be cooled. So depending upon the outside temp as well as the temp of the refrigeration, it may not come on. When you say "our unit is ommiting a strange odor" are you refering to the outside condenser? or from the air handler? and what does it smell like? Please give us more to work with to be able to help you. Yes there are people looking and working on problems here at Fixya.com.

Fan whining and blades not going

Sounds like your compressor outside is frozen up or (locked up) the smell is outside correct? it could also be your fan also in your condensor unit outside the easiest way is to listen for fluid movement (if your freon is moving then your compressor is working and you need to lean toward a fan motor. check to see if you can move the fan blades in the compressor (outside ) if the problem is in the house then approach in the same way with the power to the unit turned off only If you cannot turn it most likely fan motor replacement is in order, and pressure sensors are not letting your condensor run. theres a few things to try hope i have helped .Honestly it probably would not hurt to let a service man look at it anyway, but this way at least you're a little wiser chris

OUTSIDE UNIT OPERATES BUT FAN DOESN'T TURN AND UNIT DOESN'T COOL.

the motor could just be locked in place from sitting...take a stick or something and try to see if it spins be sure of rotation! you can also give it a little nudge while it is on and it will take off! if this happens then you have a bad start compacitor but no there are no fuses that only protect the motor!

Goodman split unit that heats instead of cools

Hi, Could be a run capacitor on the fan motor. They usually swell up and or leak when they go bad. If not, the only real way to test them it with a specific capacitor tester. A new capacitor would be cheaper. Make sure that the outside unit is disconnected from power before opening it up, try to spin the fan blade by hand. If it doesn't spin freely it may need oiled if possible. See above solution. Your problem is the fan motor though so if this don't do it, It will have to be replaced. If this helps, Please rate my solution. Thanks, kstfas
