AC unit with ''test'' plug; test shows ''green'', but AC doesn't work

Sears kenmore 580.75101500

Test feature is part of the plug end that connects to the wall outlet; when I press the test button the green light stays on...but there is a strange buzzing sound (I have no idea if the sound is normal...it's a friend's unit).

Thanx for any help.

    Sorry, I wasn't clear enough.

    The buzzing only lasts a fraction of a second - and it's coming directly from the combination PLUG END/TESTING DEVICE...NOT from the AC unit itself.

    Boy, I'm losing my touch at clarity, shastalaker7...I apologize for the mediocre rating - but because of my lack of clarity, the problem wasn't solved.

    The unit does not work at ALL! Zilch, Zip, Nada...the light stays on at the Test Switch/Plug...but absolutely NO RESPONSE from the main AC unit itself.

    Hope I've starightened my mess out. Thanx! ;>)

Hi, and no this buzzing is not normal. If the test button does not trip, its not to major. It sounds as though you have a relay, fan, compressor, or some other relay that has worn contacts that buzz when power is put to it. If the unit operates and its not to the point it is driving you insane, you can take it apart to locate which relay is the noise one and replace it if you have the skills to tackle it. If it fails completely, not knowing the sequence of operation unless you can read a ladder schematic, you will have problems locating the one that was buzzing. I would remove the front cover if its a wall or window unit to find the control section and locate this buzzing relay to replace it.

    Hi, I see you have already rated me, but I will tell you that it is nothing to worry about. What you are hearing is when you turn it on, all of the amperage the unit uses to start causes this quick buzz. Feel free to use it.

    Thats OK, I understand completely. Now that I know the unit is not working, and this buzz is for a split second, I would say that you have a dead short in one of of the units componants. Even though the led at the cord light is on, when you turn the unit on the buzz cuts power due to this short which is the buzzing sound you here.You have either lost the blower motor, maybe the compressor, or even a shorted capacitor. You would have to have to expertice to tear into the control and parts section off this unit to test each componant to locate what is wrong. But I can say doing what it's doing is its way of telling you of a big problem, and this is a safety device on the cord to prevent a faulty part getting hot enough to catch on fire. Its good that it's doing its job, but not good that you more then likely have a fairly serious problem going on. Depending on the age and value of the unit, it may be for the best to compare prices to have it looked at to replacing it. If it is a wall or window unit, it would save you many $$$$ to remove and take it down to a appliance repair house then to call out a tech to trouble-shoot it.They would be able to find the problem very quick as we used to pull these and take them back to the bench and find the problem. You can makes some calls to see. It would best to be left up to a pro that does this and has the right tools and skills to do this, as getting into the freon part of a unit requires that you are certified by the E.P.A. It would be very difficult for me to walk you through the steps it takes to take it apart and test these things also. Wish I could be on site. I thank you for the rating, it was very kind of you. I have a Coleman mach RV roof Ac with a fan and separate Furnace unit. None of the units will turn on.The AC did work along with the fan. Now nothing works. All of the fuses are good


Check the plug end of the Power cord for a broken wire. If you can test the cord for continuity with an ohm meter do that first. Most likely you can get a replacement plug. You'll need to cut the old one off and strip the wires back to connect the new plug.

Air conditioning switch on dash doesn't seem to work. How can I test it?


Remove the wire plug to the AC switch and then use DVM (Digital Volt meter) set to resistance at say 200 ohm range and use the meter probes across the two exposed terminals of AC switch (depressed position) to see if you read low resistance. If so it shows switch is working.

It's quite likely your unit had a blown thermal fuse caused by a bad thermostat. Test them by disconnecting one end and a meter should show continuity if the part is good. The pro's test them in circuit while the unit is plugged in, power showing across the part means it is bad. REPLACE BOTH PARTS TOGETHER.

Air condition wont turn on


Do you have enough power to unit? Check plug for any loose wires on unit, with unit unplugged of course.

Gas dryer does not agnite - Start button will roll the drum but will not remain on when released. No fire/


Howdy: Inside the dryer is the flame starting unit. Two solenoids with AC voltage turns on and fire up the unit. Take out the firing unit and a appliance store will test for nothing. (Sears) Good luck - Doug

How to connect


Check the wires.
One wire should end with a thin green pin.
Connect the green pin to the green socket on your computer.
If there is a black pin, you have a sub-woofer, and the black pin
connects to the black socket on one of the speakers.
Connect the wire with the 2-prong silver plug to AC power, e.g., to a power-bar.

Test the speakers.

My daughter leaned up against the lighted display panel and now all the lights are flashing. how do I adjust it to stop it from flashing and make sure the temperature wasn't changed


she may have got the unit to enter the show floor mode or the test mode. you should be able to unplug the unit and wait a few minutes. it should reset itself and then go back to working properly. if not call the sears 800 # and ask if they can tell you how to get the unit out of test mode.
