This is a fault in the control system...prob the high limit switch or pressure valve

After a startup sequence determines that it is safe to turn on the gas and ignitor. Unfortunately it didn't detect ignition so it shut the system down. It could be the ignition sensor, wires or the controller. I suggest contacting the Hayward technical support and they may be able to walk you through the diagnostics. I hope this helps. PS. If you get it going don't forget to fix the bypassed air valve you mentioned.

When the burners ignite, within one minute it starts making a loud banging noise and then the HS code comes on and it shuts down. the noise continues for about 15 to 30 seconds after the burners shut...

This sounds like a low water flow situation. The heater is telling you that the high limit sensor is curring heater operation. The noises are the heat exchangers boiling the water either due to a blockage in the exchanger , a bad mixing vlve, or most likely poor water flow. This is tough to troubleshoot through a posting like this, but 1st thing is 1st. Check your water flow and make sure it is minimum 50 Gallons per minute.

Hayward H 300 series pool heater for an inground pool. Pilot light is lit. Filter is clean. If I jump the terminals the heater will go on. If not the heater will not start.

I have an H300 Millivolt Hayward heater. It will start and run for about 1 minute then shuts off along with the pilot going out. I've tried cleaning all the terminals and running all new wiring but same result. I've also jumped out the TH to TH terminals leaving the jumper in place and it still shuts down after 1 minute. Any idea what that could be ?

Lo error showing and it kicks off about every 6 minutes

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

A 'LO' error code for a Hayward heater is a limit string open error. If the limit string opens the heater shuts down and goes into lockout. Automatic restart is 2 minutes after the error condition is corrected and the limit string closes.

The limit string is a series of switches designed to turn off the heater if air or water temperatures exceed a safe operating limit.

The problem may be faulty a switch(es) but is far more likely to be a system condition the switches are reacting too that needs to be corrected. Low flow of combustion air due to obstructions around the heater or the vent; low flow of water through the heater allowing too high a water temp; Poor venting or sooted-over heat exchanger causing flame rollout. These are all conditions that should be eliminated if they exist.

If you are not familiar with these switches or the conditions described you may want to consider calling in a professional. Hayward can refer you to someone in your area who is. Call Hayward at 908-351-5400 or try the website locator found here.

My hayward h400ed2 heater starts for 2-3 seconds then shuts down showing error IF. I checked the gas orifices - they all clean. Heater was working fine fo the most of the summer then started showing IF...

Have you installed anything in your home that uses gas? Alot of times it due to low gas pressure.

When you checked the orfices did you actually remove them? or just stick a paperclip inside and clean them?

If the heater is firing ..even for 2-3 seconds the ignightor is fine. If it wasnt it wouldnt lite, period... bad call on hayward

My Hayward pool 350000 heater will light and stay lit and heat the pool for a while, but will just shut off including the pilot light. When I re-light it it works for a while again and then shuts off...

Sounds like the pilot assy needs to be replaced. It has 2 functions one is to light the main burner but also to let the system know that the burner is lit. If it thinks the burners are not lit it turns the gas off
