Hello,
It should be blue. If it's got orange tips, it's burning dust, If it's got yellow flames or tips, it may need the air shutter adjusted, regulator pressure adjusted, the vent unblocked or just a real good cleaning. Douglas

My fire burns with an orange flame and is either on full heat or low heat, no inbetween so can't ajust heat properly, can I fix it myself and if so, how.

Don't know whether you can adjust to somewhere between low and high. However, the flame colour that you describe seems a bit off. I would have expected it to be bluer. The air/gas ratio might need adjusting and before you ask, I have no idea!

Richmond 5v40-7 gas water heater. Burner lights completely but flame is very low. Does not grow above 1/4 inch.

Is flame clear blue or yellow?
Yellow flame, clean the flame arrestor screen

Flame is blue:
Low gas pressure.
Bad gas control valve.
Dirty combustion parts.
Clean the water heater parts and catch up on maintenance.-

On my patio heater the pilot light will light but goes out as soon as I release it, even after holding it down a long time. I can't get it to stay on to light the heater.

Check that the pilot light is directed at the thermocouple, a copper 'tube' that heats up when the pilot light is lit. You should be able to see a copper coloured small tube that the pilot light is directed at - if the pilot flame is not heating that tube then the main burner will not light.

If the thermocouple is being heated correctly, then it could be a fault with the thermocouple itself (can be replaced) or the gas valve.

If the pilot flame is not heating the end of the thermocouple you should be able to adjust its position so that the pilot flame is directed at it more accurately

Rinnai 556 F sputters when starting

As a licenced plumber the only thing I will suggest is to call someone and have them service the heater.

Gas is deadly, and it sounds like there is something blocking the injector port, causing the gas/air mixture to not mix properly, which will make the flame change colour and characteristics.

The burner may need to come out, the inlet gas pressure will need to be checked and other things.

The rinai heaters are also expensive, as you would know, and trying to fix it yourself is dangerous. Also, once serviced by a plumber you will have the peace of mind to know it has been serviced properly and will run well for many more years.

You will need to find a licenced gas fitter.
