Computer does not recognizeportable iomege hard drive

My hard drive worked fine until somehow corruption occurred. Now it does not recognize the hard drive. It says no power. The light briefly comes on as soon as I connect USB to my computer (several - desk top, laptop and office) and then it goes out. My computer or explorer act as if there is nothing in that drive. There might be two problems.

1. There is a boot sector virus due to which autoexe in your hdd is unable to execute hence your Operating system is unable to recognise the hdd. Solution, take it to a linux PC if you yourself don't know how to use linux then take the help of peer and ask him to connect your hdd and use mount command and then mk2fs command to format it. In linux exe virus can't do anything hence your hdd will be recognised and it will work again on windows after format from linux.

2. there might be hardware issue with your hdd the connector which connects to your hdd has gone bad. take an electronic cleaner spray it on the connecting home and clean it properly and then try to connect it to windows pc. If not then you have to replace the connector. These connectors are quite delicate which are on your hdd. while unplugging the wire from hdd if you are not gentle then they do go bad. My suggestion is don't remove the wire from hdd always keep it connected to the hdd. Only remove the udd from usb which you connect to pc.

There was no light when I connect the hard drive to the computer. So I went to the Micrcenter & the expert there advised to buy a case that came with new connecting wiring system. Now it lights up but hard disk makes a noise as if it is trying to connet to the computer. The Microcenter expert checked it out and told me that hard disk is bad due to overload of electicity or some other physical or electrical damage has occurred. I am interested in recovering the data on the drive. Any suggestions? Thanks

The solution is there but quite costly and can be performed by an expert only. What the expert is required to do in this situation is to open another working hdd of the same make and model remove the storage hardware from bad hdd and fix it in the new hdd. That would work with a probability of 90%.

Hello,

The problem is that the hard drive as been affected by virus and will need to be scan for virus, in other for it to be virus free. scan the hard drive with a license and active anti-virus to ensure the removal of the virus.

If after scanning the problem still persist, am afraid to tell you that, the only way out is to get the hard drive formatted, this way, you will lose all the files in the hard drive, but i advice you scan the hard drive for virus to ensure it is virus free.

Take care.

    Hello,

Go to the Bios settings and change the settings of the hard drive on the system to master and the one you are attaching as slave, in this way, your system will see and recognize the attached drive.

    Take care.

    Hello,

Turn on your laptop or computer.
Press the "ESC" key repeatedly while the laptop is starting up. The
"ESC" key is located on the upper left-hand corner of your laptop
    keyboard.
View your laptop's BIOS. Use the arrow keys on your laptop keyboard to
navigate the menus of the BIOS program.
From here, you can change the settings, set the hard drive in your system to master while the attached hard drive should be set to slave. with this settings your system should recognize the attached hard drive.

    Take care.

My computer does not recognize the Fanton titanium drive. It was working properly for last 2 years and contains and all of a sudden I cannot see it's drive location once I connect it to multiple computers in my household.

I suspect that one of my teenagers "moved" a file instead of copying it and somehow corrupted the file structure. By the way, I have already tried to see if it is a problem that can be fixed by assigning a drive using Disk MGMT. It is not recognized there either.

No, the disk doesn't appears in My Computer because the file system on it is completely corrupted - all the data is lost. To see if the hard disk itself is recoverable download, install and run this free program (select the correct disk for testing)

My computer is not recognizing the drive when I plug it in.

Hi did you try in other computer if yes and still didnt work do you listen any noise on the hard drive .
another thing to do to be sure that the usb ports are working fine in your computer its not been disabled bu bios or an antivirus please plug a flash drive or other hard drive in the computer and see if it gets recognized if yes then your system dosent have any issue .and check the hard drive if it dosent get recognized in the other computer also then may be the partitiontable is corrupt or your iomega hard drive case has problem.
To remove data from your hard drive in the worse case u need to remove the hard drive and plug it to the system directly and check
Thanks

I have Windows XP with service pack 3. My system no longer recognizes the Maxtor 3200 external hard drive. Do I need to get an updated driver to the hard drive? When I first connected the Maxtor HD. ...

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

The filesystem on the drive could have become corrupt. If you can run a utility on it to see if it finds any problems, that would be the first step. I would try Norton Utilities. Otherwise, try plugging your drive into another computer and see if it can recognize it.

Computer doesn't recognize my Lacie HD

From your description it sounds like you power adapter did indeed fail at first, but if the HDD spins now the adapter seems to be working fine at the moment. If the hdd is in device manager, than at least you can use carving tools like photorec to pull your files out, even if the filesystem is corrupt. If you want somebody else to do it for you you can check Data Recovery NYC. Otherwise http://hddguru.com/ is a great source for tools and knowledge on how to do it yoruself.

I would suspect a corrupted catalog file, these are the map that a comupter uses to find its way around the drive, they are also the first casualty when a crash corrupts something. Disc warrior will write a new catalog and fix everything. PCs do not see discs formatted for macs.
