Go to the control panel, go to printers and faxes, click or righ click on your printer, choose printer preferences and look for the color section.
You should have color options where you can choose "black print cartridge only" or something similar.

Yes sounds to me like one of your ink cartridge is empty. Replace and try again.

If color ink runs out- i want to print in black without replacei

I found this out when trying to do the same with Epson (after talking to their tech support). The printers with printheads that are reusable (Epson, Canon, Kodak, and whoever else) force you to replace the empty cartridge so that air doesn't get drawn into the printhead, killing it off. The tank still has a little ink in there to keep it from drying out. It's cheaper to replace the cartridge than getting a new printhead.

Have a Kodak all in one 5500...black cartridge went empty, replaced it with a non-Kodak cartridge, now it won't print black...changed back to real Kodak cartridge and problem remains....have cleaned...

I think the printhead is already defective since you tried using a non kodak ink the big difference is the viscosity of a non kodak ink is diff. w/ the original giving more load to the printhead and making it defective.

HP5500 printer. My red comes out brown. Anyone know what to do?

Generally it is the fault of the colour ink cartridge. The head is contaminated. Try replacing.

My printer will not print in colour.

I had the same problem but, with the black not printing at first.
It may be the printhead needs replacing. This seems to be a common problem with this series (confirmed by tech)
You can call Kodak at 1-800-235-6325.
They'll send one out for free.
Hope this helps.

I'm trying to fax, it says color cartridge replace

marcarrico,

Even though you do not print in colour, your printer will still slowly but surely **** out the colour ink in your printer/fax machine. The unit does a thing called purging. this is a necessary part of the printer maintaining the print head in a printable condition. Everytime it does this it will **** a small amount of ink through the head, Including your colour inks. Over time the inks will empty even if you don't use the ink. All inkjet printers do this and there is not a thing you can do about it. If you want to use the printer, you will have no choice but to replace the colour cartridges.
As a suggestion, if you only ever use black then you would be far better off with a small laser fax. they start from about $350au and they will give you a better print in text and the cartridges will last about 10 times as long as the ink jet.

How to fax when ink cartridge is empty

I talked to Kodak and you can't. You have to have all ink cartridges filled and ready in order to perform any operation! I know, it sucks!
