Water filter replacement on a GE Profile Refrigerator

Hi,
I tried replacing the water filter on my GE side by side Profile Refrigerator. It seems odd that the instructions in the refrigerator manual and the instructions with the new filter don't tell you to turn off the water so I didn't. I flooded my kitchen, mixed up the two filters in the chaos of trying to get one back in place while water spewed everywhere. Now I wasted $40 on a filter and still don't know if the new one is on or the old one. Is there a place to turn off the water flow on the frig while changing the filter or do I have to go to the meter? Also, is there a way to tell which filter is the new one? They are identical. Thanks from Montgomery, AL.

You should NOT have to turn the water off to replace the filter. I have the same refrigerator and it closes water line itself when you turn the filter and drop it down. If yours flooded, I can only imagne the valve that the filter opens when in place got stuck.

There is a valve on the wall behind your refrigerator which can be shutoff.

The old filter should be heavier as it would still have water in it. Turn them over one by so water can drain out. The one with the smallest amount of water should be the new one. I always use a sharpie and mark the filter with the install date... that way ou know when to replace and which is the old one.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the quick reply. I've been mopping up and cleaning for the past two hours. Your solution makes perfect sense, as there was no mention of turning off the water. I'll move it out in the morning and turn the water to the frig off and then compare the two filters. Thanks for some good practical advice, a sharpie! Why didn't I think of that. Take care and thanks again. "

No dispensing water...GE refrigerator

There may be an interlock switch on the housing where the filter or dummy stopper is inserted. If this interlock is not satisfied, then the water dispenser won't turn on. This would prevent water from spraying all over the inside of the refrigerator if the filter is not seated properly. Check to make sure the filter or plug is inserted properly.

I replaced my GE profile MWF water filter (identical GE part) and now I dont have water dispensing and don't have a working ice maker

Quite frequently carbon fines can be flushed from filter and plug the filter. If you have the bypass plug to replace the filter. Put that in and flush system completely. Take the filter and flush it at the kitchen sink. It is best to fill these with water before installing and flush the carbon fines before installing in fridge.

My filter is located on the inside of the refrigerator in the top right corner. It twists off and is easy to replace.

In my GE Performance refrigerator side-by-side Ice is being made, but no water is dispensing. The GE Smartfilter is atleast 5 yrs old. I just replace new filter still not working

If the water stopped before you replaced the filter we have something to consider is that the water control valve on the rear of the back of your Profile and down where the water enters the refrigerator you will see two coils and a set of female plugs attaches to each coil. Most likely the coil for your water dispenser is defective and and the side for the ice has not failed. When telling you the correct model of your profile is needed to give you the replacement part number for your dual water control valve. In a few moments I will show you an example of the part that I am talking about, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Low water flow after changing the water filter in a gf profile re

Just a suggestion, you could try installing a filter on the water supply line to the fridge. A nice one should dramatically lessen the frequency of replacing the one in the fridge. As for your the pressure being low, look for a kink or pinch in the water supply line.
