Try turning up both the system volume (on your top menu bar, by your clock), and the itunes volume (in the itunes window), maybe one of them is set too low..?

How to Rip DVD to iTunes for Free

Want to watch movies from your own DVD library on your iPod? With Instant Handbrake, free software for Mac OSX, you can easily make any DVD into an iTunes-compatible movie.
HandBrake is an open-source program designed to convert MPEG video (including DVD-Video) into an MPEG-4 video file in MPEG-4 Part 14 (.mp4) or Matroska (.mkv) containers. The program is used to convert DVDs into other forms so they can be viewed on iPods, iPhones and with the Mac QuickTime Player.

Step by step guide:
1: Install Handbrake
Simply download the "Windows GUI" from the Handbrake download page then run the installer. It's that simple. If you get a prompt telling you that you don't have the correct version of .Net framework installed, then you'll need to download this from the Microsoft website.
2: Select your DVD source.
3: Insert your DVD. You many need to stop the auto-play.
4: Hit "Continue" in Instant Handbrake. It will begin to scan your DVD.
5: Select the file you want to convert. For full-length movies, this will be the file with the longest duration. For DVDs of TV Shows, please refer to the "Tips" section.
6: Select where you want the converted files to be saved to. It's a good idea to save it to your "Movies" folder in Mac OSX.
7: For the rest of the options on this screen, select H.264 for the "File Format," and for the "Picture Format" select "Original." This will preserve the picture format (wide or full screen) that's on the DVD.
8: Hit "Convert." The movie will now be converted and saved to the folder you indicated in step six.
9: Launch iTunes.
10: Navigate to the folder your movie is saved in and drag the MP4 file into the iTunes Movie Folder.
11: Hook up your iPod and sync up - or if you manually transfer from iTunes to your iPod, drag the movie on to your iPod. Now you're ready to enjoy your movie on the go!
Tips & Warnings:
If you have a DVD of TV shows, it's recommended that you export each individual show. DVD's have a "Play All" feature, which is all the episodes jammed into one file, this will be the longest duration in the list of files you get in step 5.
You can also export to PSP format if you've got one of those. H.264 is the best quality format for iPod.
Handbrake is a more robust version of Instant Handbrake. The program offers more options, but the concept is the same. This will work on Windows and Linux as well as Mac OSX
Copy protection may prevent DVDs from being converted to iPod format.
More tag info: rip dvd to itunes free, dvd ripper, How to rip copyrighted dvd.
I want more volume from my mac

Playing through VLC is one option, ensuring that the show audio effects button is activated in the VLC view menu, click on the button the bottom right of the VLC player the left of the two buttons, then you can increase the volume by 20 decibels, also VLC's actual volume can be set to 200%, VideoLAN Official page for VLC media player the Open Source video framework

in iTunes there is a volume adjust option for each file too, select the item in your library, press cmd + i, a box appears, go across to the options tab there you can increase the volume by 100% for the selected item, there is also the "Window" menu bar menu, click it you will see the equalizer option, click it this will allow you to boost all iTunes audio by 12 decibels, as well as iTunes regular volume control

or if your still not satisfied, try Boom, Awesome Mac volume booster and system wide equalizer it's not free, but is really good, it's £4.99 / $6.99 from the mac app store, and there is a free trial if you want to test it first.

But I have used it myself on my old mac, and it's brilliant, so really no need to test it :-)

Can barely hear anything of any audio but device manager says audio device working

Right click your volume icon in notification area and adjust volume settings in there. Try headphones and see if its still the same, in case its your actual speakers going bad.

Cant get songs onto memorex mmp9008 using mac osx

The ITunes filters all music so it goes only (like WM and RP does) into their compatible, licensing paying devices. Just save the songs (MP3 or Wav) outside the ITunes folder and upload it directly into the 9008 or any other MP3 compatible.

Sound Audio card?

Macs don't generally use a replaceable sound card in a slot like PCs. Instead they usually have sound capability built into the main board.
Which model of Mac do have and what model of CD player did you put in it?
Can you hear sound from sources other than the CD player - such as iTunes, internet, system alerts, etc?
As I recall, one CD drive I upgraded on an older Mac did require a light wire harness for the audio output. None of the DVD drives I have replaced recently have needed this.
Did you, personally, remove the old drive? If needed for the new drive, I'm guessing the old drive would have had an audio cable too.
