Most mobile handsets have the feature of: A) while the phone is ringing, use the up & down volume buttons to alter loudness of the ring B) while ur talking on the phone, do the same to alter listening volumne.
Is the volume up? Download Zedge, look for a decent ring tone and set it as default ring tone. Try now. If it still doesn't work, go to settings, volume and make sure that is all the way up.
If you are facing the problem with some incoming calls it is an indication that you have set different ring tones for different users or incoming calls.
Very simply reset your mobile to a default setting by going to setting, restore factory setting and every thing shall be back to normal.
Strange. I would try resetting your iPhone. Hold down the home and power buttons until it powers off. It should start up automatically but if not just press the power button. This has worked for me in the past when my iPhone has acted strangely. Don't worry about a reset or hard reboot. You won't lose any data or settings.
Here some solutions for your problem + a link to the user manual.
**Selecting the Ring Tone and Volume Your phone has five different ringer tone/volume combinations you can choose from. To select the ringer: 1) With the phone in standby, press [vol/ / ] or [vol/ / ]. 2) The phone will sound the different ring tones at different volumes. To turn the ringer off, select RINGER OFF. 3) When the phone sounds the ring tone and volume you wish to use, press [end].
**Temporarily Mute Ringer If the handset is off the base while an incoming call is ringing, simply press [end] to mute the incoming ring. The ringer will sound with the next incoming call. Note: You can only mute the handset ringer if the handset is off the base when the phone starts ringing. Adjusting the Earpiece.

The answer mode determines whether the HP Fax answers incoming calls or not.
Different answer modes are :
* Fax
The HP Fax will automatically answer all incoming calls using the Rings to Answer setting. This is the default setting.
* FaxTel (unit with handset model only)
The HP Fax automatically answers all incoming calls using the Rings to Answer setting. If the call is a fax call, the HP Fax will receive the fax. If the call is a voice call, the HP Fax will create a special ring to indicate it is a voice call. The incoming voice call will need to be answered using the attached handset.
NOTE: If the HP Fax determines the call is a voice call, only the HP Fax will ring with the special ring tone. The other phones on the same phone line will not ring at all. You will not be able to pick up the voice call using the other phones.
* Tel
The HP Fax will not automatically answer calls. Faxes will need to be received manually.
* AnswerMachine
The HP Fax will monitor the line when an incoming call is answered by a person or by the answering machine. If the HP Fax detects fax tones on the line, it will receive the fax.

The cadence is different, but you can change all the other rings to a different tone. On a 76xx phone, press PROG and the CO button twice. Press your navigator button up (or down) until you hear the tone you like, then press enter to save.
Select Menu > Settings > sound settings > incoming call > ring tone (now press the i button at the center) and select Default Ringtones. You can select the ringtone here.
Please note, this is for the SGH-U600 model. If you have a different model, please post back with the correct model number.
