My DVD is not working it says "Root" and the DVD wont' display on the tV . What should I push on the remote?

  • janetmatt441 Jun 07, 2010

I already put in the DVD and pressed play. That's not the answer. And, I don't think it's a hardware issue. I hit a weird button the remote and can't seem to fix it. JM

Hi .

Root indicates that the DVD player is set to the Root of the hard disk drive, and for this reason does not display the DVD being played.

To get out of this feature you need to press the DVD menu on remote.
This is often a button with a disk picture on top or a button with DVD or Disk on it. Sometimes you have to press the Menu button. This depends on the model.

I can be more specific on the button to use if you give me info on make and model.

Please be patient after posting.

Also some model does reset back to TV after disconnecting power cord.

Regarding display on TV, if ther is no picture at all, then you may have to set the input source. If DVD is in root mode you should also have an on screen menu from DVD player. A control bar I mean, even with static. If there is nothing, ensure that the source is set to the DVD unit.

First get out of root mode, give me model info if the above did not work.

Regards.

Ginko.

    Hi Ginko,

I think you have got it right. I will try an dsee what happens. Are you all just random individuals who answer these questions? All three answers were completely different and the first two were completely off base. I would never pay for this service again.

    Hi Janet.

Sorry for the late replay, I was offline.

Re:"Are you all just random individuals who answer these questions?"

No. We are a community mainly made of experts made by professionals, DIYers, technicians, repairmen etc. Most of us are committed to help the asker.

Unfortunately Fixya is also populated with posters that try scoring few extra dollars posting just any answer. The administrators take measures to prevent this kind of posters answering questions, but this is quite difficult to do in practice.
Casual posters point at the default reward that is given to any comment when the user does not vote positively any answer.

The best option for the asker is refusing the persons posting causal comments, and sticking with the genuine helpers.

In case your problem is still not fixed, please let me kno make and model of the DVD unit and TV. I will find specific info on this model.

    All the best.

    Ginko.

    Hi Ginko,

Thanks. It still isn't working. The remote is a philips DVD player 727-17. The TV is a Sony Bravia. There still is no picture.

Hi,

This Error Message usually indicates a Hardware Fault. This is a common problem on most of the Players.

The problem seems to be with the capacitors on the circuit board. I recommend a reset. Switch off and disconnect it from power supply/batteries. Also disconnect any other units connected to it. Leave this disconnected for 30 minutes. All the electric charges stored should drain out. It should do a soft reset itself, then restart it.

You can try to open and clean it with a compressed air. The dirt could be causing it. Also look for loose connections inside the unit. Please take precaution while opening the unit as there might be high voltages present inside.

If this doesn't solve your problem then a component on circuit board will need replacement.. most likely capacitors have gone bad and cant hold charge anymore..If individual components are not available the whole circuit board will need replacement.

Opening up the unit will void the warranty. You can try to call manufacturer and see if they will take/repair the unit. or they will be able to give you a quote for repair. You can find the contact phone number in the manual..

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Actually root is merely the startup menu on many dvd players. your player may not be broken at all. Insert a dvd and push play. J.

No color when switching to component cable

To Change DVD Player Video Output to Progressive Scan: With your DVD Player turned on, and your TV turned on, press and hold the PREV/VIDEO button for at least 3 seconds (this puts you into Video Output mode). Press the PREV/VIDEO button to access different video output options. Each time you press
PREV/VIDEO, the type of video being displayed appears next to the Display menu. Look for PSCAN on your DVD player display panel. At this time, your progressive scan on TV should be working.
