Oreck XL2200 Bagged Upright Vacuum Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 05, 2010

I heard that a class action lawsuit against Oreck Vacuum is being started because of all the problems customers are having with their vacuums. Does anyone know about this? My Oreck is only a couple of years old and keeps burning up belts. I took it in after only one week of usage when I started to notice white smoke coming out of it and the smell of burning rubber. I feel like I got the old run-around, when the service tech told me he couldn't find anything wrong (but replaced the burned up belt) with it. After several more returns and three more belts, I just quit using it. I contacted Oreck and they wouldn't help. I even tried to talk with Mr. Dave Oreck and was told that would never happen, as he does not discuss problems with his customers. Any help woud be appreciated as I would like to get some usage out of this vacuum.

How do I reset my oreck vacuum cleaner

If you are talking about the Oreck Magnesium vacuum, press the start button and hold it for about 15 seconds. Beyond that, most Oreck vacuums do not have any reset buttons.

Oreck Belts

Unfortunately this is a very common problem on the Oreck XL uprights. As you you noticed, there is even an extra belt storage on the machine itself, on the bottom plate. When a vacuum cleaner has to put an extra belt on the machine, this should be a clear warning sign that you're going to have replace belts.....frequently! Unfortunately this is just the nature of the beast. Since there is no height adjustment on the nozzle itself, the vacuum will lower until it hits the carpet, the carpet is the only thing that adjusts the height of the carpet attachment. On other vacuums you have the ability to raise and lower the brush head according to what type of carpet your cleaning. When the brushes are at the proper height, the belt is also running at the proper tension and strength on the brush. Since the Oreck doesn't have a height adjustment, the brushes have a lot more resistance to the carpeting, which is what leads me assume that's why the machine goes through so many belts.

Oreck XL's were designed for hotels. Their slogan used to be "The Hotel Vacuum for you Home" even. Anyone who has ever stayed at a hotel knows that most have a very low pile commercial grade carpeting. The Oreck XL does a fabulous job at cleaning low pile carpeting that doesn't have a lot of dirt to vacuum up (restaurants kill most vacuums, but especially Oreck). The problem is that the Oreck XL was originally designed for cleaning low pile commercial grade carpeting, and not to clean plush, piled carpeting. The Oreck's have a 4 AMP motor in them, and where as it's true AMP's don't equal suction power, it's safe to assume that a 4 AMP motor will not produce near the suction as a 12 AMP would. When cleaning low piled commercial carpeting, you don't need much suction power, even an electric broom can clean this type of carpeting.

Oreck however does do one thing right, and that's advertising. David Oreck is everywhere! Newspapers, TV commercials, internet advertising, direct mailers, and more. They spend so much money advertising their vacuum cleaners that everyone is familiar with their products. What most people don't realize is that the customer is the one gets to pay for all of the advertising that's being done! Through the power of advertising, Oreck has taken what should sell for a $100 electric broom, and turned it into a $600 full size upright! Dyson vacuums are the exact same way, a lot of advertising, but not much vacuum behind the price.

Chances are that if you heard about a product through a info-mercial, or a newspaper add, then that product automatically is going to be sell for more then it's worth.

Unfortunately I can't help you fix the problem with your Oreck continuing to burn belts, but I can give you a link to the belts on our site if you need to purchase them. We offer free shipping:
3 Oreck XL® Upright Vacuum Replacement Belts

If you (or your friend) would like a personalized recommendation of a good vacuum specific for your exact cleaning needs, please feel free to add a comment, or contact me, I'd be happy to help.

Oreck XL2 does not start.

There could be a problem with the cord. I suggest taking it to a local vacuum shop to have it inspected as that could be the problem

Is there a reset switch on the Oreck vacuum?

No.

If the unit is not running at all, this is a 2 speed unit, right? I'd check for a failure of the diode that provides the 2 speed action.

Next likely failure is a broken wire at motor.

My Oreck Vacuum cleaner keeps burning up belts. I

I am having the same trouble. I bought the vacuum new in October 2007 when my wife and I purchased a newly constructed home. Since it is only two of us, she only has to vacuum once a month. I have taken it in three different times and get the same story. It needed a new belt. Mine has white smoke coming out of it and smells like burning rubber. I contacted Oreck and got no results. They refused to let me discuss this with Dave Oreck, stating that he nevers talks with customers! Gary Neeble

Can I get a wiring diagram of the handle on an Oreck XL 2.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum. The best place to get an owner’s manual is from the Oreck Factory of which I will supply for you listed below or you can download the owner’s manual from the Oreck Website. . I would check with your local Oreck dealer or vacuum dealer in your area to see what is going on. This is most unusual for this to happen. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
