Question about Leica LRF 1200 Laser Rangefinder

Open Question

Difficult time reading a target on bright sunny day's.

This Leica range master 1200 scan model has a very difficult time picking up a target wether reflective or non reflective during day light conditons on a sunny day and still has problems on a cloudy day but not as much. I have installed new battery's,cleaned glass and dont know what else I can do. The range finder works well in the dark but this makes it unusable for hunting. Thanks for any help you can send my way. I compete in 3d archery so I bought a new rangefinder 2 days ago and it reads 19.2 yards at exactly 20 yards is there a way to adjust it to read properly?

Page 5 of the manual states: RANGING ACCURACY The ranging accuracy of the Scoutâ„¢1000 is plus or minus one yard / meter under most circumstances. The maximum range of the instrument depends on the reflectivity of the target. The maximum distance for most objects is 650 yards / 594 meters while for highly reflective objects the maximum is 1000 yards / 914 meters. Note: You will get both longer and shorter maximum distances depending on the reflective properties of the particular target and the environmental conditions at the time the distance of an object is being measured. The color, surface finish, size and shape of the target all affect reflectivity and range. The brighter the color, the longer the range. White is highly reflective, for example, and allows longer ranges than the color black, which is the least reflective color. A shiny finish provides more range than a dull one. A small target is more difficult to range than a larger target. The angle to the target also has an effect. Shooting to a target at a 90 degree angle (where the target surface is perpendicular to the flight path of the emitted energy pulses) provides good range while a steep angle on the other hand, provides limited ranging. In addition, lighting conditions (e.g. the amount of sunlight) will affect the ranging capabilities of the unit. The less light (e.g. overcast skies) the farther the unit's maximum range will be. Conversely, very sunny days will decrease the unit's maximum range.

The difference you are experiencing (20-19.2=.8 yards) is within the device ranging accuracy of 1 yard, and is in fact an error of only 4%. That is pretty accurate

Good luck with your device.

I have the Leica CFR 1200 Rangefinder. Does this readout in Yards or Meters and can it be changed?

There are two different sub-models of the CRF 1200. The 527 reads in meters while the 523 reads in yards. This is not something that can be changed by the user.

Will not aquire a target over 400 yards

To aquire a target, the beam must bounce back to the unit. If you're out of square, even 1°, your beam will be missing the rangefinder by over 1 foot.

Alternative to Leica Laser Locator

Leica locator with DGPS capabilities? Leica still manufactor advanced military systems under the Swiss brand name of Vectronix which is part of the Leica group. Are you after a laser locator or a rangefinder such as the discontinued 7x42 Geovid. The Geovid is still available but no longer has the electronic compass. The original never did connect to a DGPS PC only the Leica Vectronix Vector could. None of these models will locate a laser only use a laser to calculate distance. Current Geovids range to 1200 meters and the Vectronix 21 will range to 12 Kilometers. Unless you are a certified government customer the Vectronix 21 you will not be able to purchase. Newcon have models that allegedy exceed 2000 meters that are made in Russia and depending on the model can be had for a few thousand dollars. The Leica Geovid 8, 10 or 15 power can be had for around 2.5 thousand to 3 thousand dollars and is an excellent robust unit. It will not connect to a PC for GPS sync though.

Flash Setting on camera

time to bite the bullet and read.
flash is probably the most difficult thing to master in photography. and usually high end camera manuals are smaller than the manuals for the flash units that they use.
over brightness is a result sensor settings. if the camera is looking at a dark area, it will ask the flash for more light. so, see if you are using spot metering, which lets you pick a small area of the subject and set the light and exposure for that area. if it is, then be careful where it is pointed. if you are set for a more broad metering, your camera will call for an averaging of the area probably nearer the center, but take into consideration the entire frame. the book will guide you as to how the camera is set to 'see' the subject.
read, read, read. its not really hard if you take a little at a time.
good luck
