Dell Inspiron 6000 New Hard Drive, Now no Hibernate or Standby

Hi, I had to install a new hard drive in my computer and reinstall Windows XP and everything else from the Dell restore discs... My computer seems to be missing something that allows it to hibernate or standby though. It has the button there on the 'turn off' menu but it is dark and un-usable... also, there is no hibernation tab in the power settings either. Can you help?

Try to enable hibernation from command prompt
Click on start click run type cmd then ok, black screen will appear then just type command:
powercfg /hibernate on

If there is a problem with PAE we gonna need to disable PAE

Have you installed the chipset drivers? If not then you might need to install the driver for the chipset

Sounds like you may have a corrupted/failing hard drive. If you have access to another hard drive, you can install another hard drive and install your OS and see if you still have the restarting problem.

It's possible that the only problem is that the replacement disk-drive needs to be "initialized" for first-time usage. Or, it's possible that your Dell won't support your new _larger_ disk-drive.

Did they send you a disk-drive with _greater_ capacity than your old 60GB drive?
It's possible that they "upgraded" you, because they had no (small) 60GB disk-drives in inventory.

Take your Dell "System Restore" set of CD/DVD disks, and reinstall Windows.
The Windows Installer will "initialize" your disk-drive.

I have two identical Dell Inspiron 6000 that have had hard disc failure... each after the warranty expired.. is it worth replaceing hard drive, or should spend the money and time on new machine?

Hard drives are worth replacing. Its cheaper compaired to buying a new notebook. You can even choose a larger hdd according to your preference. I suggest you buy a seagate because it has a better quality and has 2 yrs. of warranty

My Dell Inspiron 6000 won't boot up. It keeps

Hi:
The DST error code 1000-1046 is definitely a failing hard drive. ..I am not sure why your laptop is not recognizing a CD in the drive, but you should go into your BIOS settings, and in boot sequence, make sure that the CD drive is the first boot device. If you can't boot from a CD, you are not going to get very far with installing a new hard drive...

You may need to try installing windows xp. I had a gateway that had a brand new hard drive and wouldn't take 98, but installed xp flawlessly. Look at the computer and see if it says designed for Windows XP

Upgraded hard drive, from 80gb to 250gb. I have had to reload my os twice. it appears that the bios is not recognizing my hd. a friend said that the inspiron 6000 does not do well with a hd bigger then...

I dont think we can use a hard disk of 160gb in an inspiron 6000. and make sure you bought a ATA hard drive and not a SATA drive. For the Western digital try to reinstall XP and install the device drivers before installing application s/w.

Hi!

Have you ever tried reinstalling windows xp before? if not then revert back to me. I'll teach you how to check if the system still has PC restore. If you ever have tried reinstalling windows or your hdd has been replaced, then you may need to reinstall windows manually by using the discs.

Hope this helps.

How to Install a new HD on Dell Inspiron 6000?

You can always parition the drive, and install both Ubuntu and XP (dual boot).

Yes, you will be able to access the files (providing the drive isn't totally crashed), although Ubuntu may not "know" what the files are.
