Question about Craftsman 1 Hp, 4 Gal. Air Compressor

2 Answers

A/C will only pump 30-40 lbs, but keeps running.

My 1 HP 4-gallon craftsman A/C was working just fine and then would not pump beyond 30-40 lbs. And of course it did not kick off at 110 lbs because it never gets there. I replaced the tank pressure safety valve thinking it was leaking, but nothing changed.

Thank you Richard152. You was right on. I made a new gasket the compressor is working fine. Cost of my fix less than $5. Thanks again.

I have the same compressor and the exact same problem. I removed the pump head and found the gasket has blown between the two reed valve chambers in the head.

Follow up......I made a new gasket from a roll of gasket material and re-installed the head. The compressor now works fine. It once again builds pressure to approximately 110psi and shuts off just as it should. I would suggest re-torquing the head after a couple of pressure/heat cycles. Hope this helps others with the same problem.

Maybe your unloader valve is stuck or damaged. This is found in the switch assembly and if it is faulty you should be able to hear a constant hissing noise from the switch .

What type oil for model 90234 4 HP 10 gallon

The model number is not enough info but assuming it's a run of the mill, Home Depot or Craftsman type electric air compressor, you need to buy compressor pump oil at Wal Mart or an auto parts store. Please don't use Automotive motor oil because that's not going to withstand the heat of your compressor pump and you'll be buying a new compressor because of it. If your compressor has a gasoline, 4 Hp. motor, it needs Mobil 1 synthetic and change it after every 30 hours of operation.

Check for a leak between you compressor head (pump) and your tank. Your pump output may be good but as your tank pressure gets higher the leak will not allow the tank to build up.

Oil free pumps do tend to blow the piston ring (not too expensive) available at searsparts.com. Remove covers to pump and manually turn crank until piston is at top and look at the condition of the cylinder neer top, If it looks scratched, order cylinder kit with piston ring. If it looks good and shiney, could be the valve plate in the head. There are reed valves that tend to break. Run pump however with covers removed and check with soapy water for air leaks and repair as needed (air leaks under the cover will prevent unit from filling). Good luck

Does it shut off at 25 psi or just keep running and never build more pressure than that? Also, did this come on gradually or suddenly? Also, was it being used regularly when it happened or had it been sitting for a while?

Craftsman 1 HP 4 Gal air compressor runs and sounds like the air pump is working but no pressure is building up

Cold weather will freeze the water the compressor normally makes and this can prevent the switch diaphragm from releasing.... also drain the tank
