Question about Craftsman 3/8" Corded Drill

1 Answer

Keyless drill has locked in a closed position with the drill bit

How do you unlock the drill chuck with a drill bit inside the chuck.
This drill is a Sears 3/8" 31510300 Craftsman. I have used this drill many times without having this problem.

I just put mine in reverse and grasp the chuck with a pair of channel locks. Pull the trigger and hold the channel locks tightly. The chuck will release the bit.

How do I load the drill bits in the keyles chuck of my Metabo impact drill Model SBE 561?

Keyless chucks work one of two ways
1: Simply turn the chuck by hand to loosen or tighten drill bit, once it grips the drill bit you will not be able to turn it anymore
2: Some keyless chucks operate by pulling the chuck back towards the body of the drill, placing the drill bit in and then releasing the chuck back to its original position

How do I remove the drill bit from a Makita6223D?

If your drill has the original keyless chuck on it, there are two plastic rings on the chuck. The outer ring should tighten and loosen by hand enough to hold the bit(s). The inner ring is to hold on to if the chuck gets overtightened. Chucks do wear and get corroded over time and can get locked in position. If you can't get it loose by hand, channel lock pliers can help. If the chuck is that bad you may need to replace it.

Mybrand new RZ20 keyless chuck will not close around a bit.

If a large enough drill bit is inserted too far so it bottoms in the chuck, the jaws run into the bottomed shank and will not close beyond a certain point due to the interference. If you hold the drill bit out about 1/2 inch from the bottom, the jaws should close on the bit. I assume you have tested the chuck without a bit to verify they can close.

How do I exchange bits in the keyless * BLACK & DECKER 12-Volt 3/8" Cordless Drill

In Black and Decker drills when the drill stops turning the chuck spindle locks automatically. All you have to do is grip the outer sleeve of the chuck and turn it anti clockwise to open it. Turn it clockwise to close it. When you press the trigger to start drilling the spindle unlocks automatically again.

I'm new to home improvement, and just bought my first cordless drill (Ryobi P204, 18-volt, 1/2"). How the heck do I insert the bit? The drill comes with two batteries, and a charger. There is an opening...

Like many drills these days, the P 204 has keyless chuck. In order to secure a bit, locate the forward/reverse switch (right above the trigger). Set it to the center of the three positions. This will lock the drill so that it cannot turn. Now turn the black portion at the front of the drill's nose (looking at the drill from the front, clockwise rotation will tighten the chuck and counterclockwise will loosen it) Adjust the chuck jaws so the bit you have chosen will fit without too much slop and then tighten the chuck until it holds the bit snugly and straight. Unlock the forward/reverse switch (push to the right to drill or insert screws) and you should be ready to go!

I have a Black & Decker 18V cordless drill with keyless chuck. The spot where the drill bit fits is in the open position stuck and won't turn in either position. What am I missing how to unlock it?

Look at the three jaws in the chuck,if on is further out than the others the you need to tap ti back into place with a small punch and a hammer. If this does not work then you need to replace the chuck, remove the screw at the bottom of the chuck[where you put the bit],then you will need to to clamp vise grip on the chuck and with it pointed away from you hit the vise grips with a hammer with a sharp blow downward and it should come off.Hope this helps.

Keyless chuck is stuck with bit inside I can't turn it counter clockwise to unlock I have a Makita 6349d drill

Try two channel lock pliers.
Hold the bit close the the base with one.
Take the other (cloth comes in handy here to prevent marring) and turn the chuck counter clockwise to release.

Alternative (little WD40 on the chuck)
One channel lock plier hold the chuck and put the drill in reverse.
The WD40 should allow the chuck to release easier.

Good luck!

Black decker drill keyless chuck won.t open !

hold the back of the chuck with channel locks or a vice and use the same channel locks on the front and open the chuck manually it should work and you can get to the screw to replace it or the hand chuck. this can be a little frustrating but hang in there and you'll be a pro shortly.

Keyless chuck is locked in open position

First thing i would do is look inside the keyless chuck. Use a flashlight if necesary. If the 3 sliders in the chuck are the same ditance from the front then it is just stuck. If they are not then the chuck is jacked and needs to be replaced. If they line up the same then the chuck may have been on a bit of a bind, and then had some contamination in it. Usually rust will happen in here if it is humid where you live. The next thing to do is spray a bit of WD-40 or equivelant into the open chuck. Next thing to do is to put the drill in gear to go forward. Put a leather glove on your left hand to hold the keyless chuck. Set the clutch to maximum. Put the drill in the lowest gear it has and hold the chuck with the gloved hand. Pull the trigger as much as you can hold it as if you were sinching it down on a bit. If it don't break free then give it a sharp whack with a piece of wood from the side. (Don't beat the thing to death. One whack should do.) Try again. When you get it free'd up and you are storing your drill in the future it is always a good idea to leave the keyless chuck opened somewhere between all the way open, and all the way shut.
Presto.

Never have used a keyless chuck b4- need to change bit, how do I do this? thanks

hi this should be reletively easy hold the end black bit with the sivler bit holde coming out not the black bit next to the yellow case on drill you hold the black part thats at end of drill by where the bit goes into not the black bit near the trigger hope i explain this ok.
Hold this bit tight then put drill in reverse then press trigger a couple of times it might be tight but shouldnt be that tight it wont undo.
1 put in reverse
2 hold black plastic piece near where drill bit goes into
3 press trigger few times
4 this should undo it allowing you to put a bit in
make sure its in reverse else you will just tighten it up more let me know if you need further assistance ok
