i think you must have tried to change the resolution to which your monitor frequency is not suitable OR this may also happen if you are not having any graphics card or AGP card so by this there will be a range of frequencies (refresh rates) which will not work...

so you must go to that game options and change the resolution(refresh rate) which is compatible for your system to work successfully ...

check system requirements for that game is it compatible with your system or not...

if you have the graphics card then adjust the settings correctly ..

if you dont have the graphics card then if you want to buy it then your pc must have a AGP slot or the PCI express slot ...

after inserting AGP card or graphics card you will be able to play the game ...

check your directx version also if it needs update ... latest is directx9c .. some games prefer directx9 and they also something like 3d compatibility,transform & lighting hardware ...
This and all options will be available if you have the latest graphics card ...
