The 2000-0146 error code indicates a read/write failure of the hard drive. There is at least 1 sector that is failing on the drive. While it is working at the moment, the drive is failing and will over time degrade and eventually fail completely. Backup any important data, then replace the drive.

its a hard drive error you have a bad sector in the drive its defective. If its still under warranty call dell hardware support with the error code. If not buy a new 2.5" drive they are not to spendy. I just replaced mine with a 250g 7200 and my computer works great now.

Yes, it is a hard drive issue and there is no fixing it temporarily without losing your data. The best thing to get your data is to get a USB enclosure for the type of drive it is (if it's a sata drive or a pata drive) or get an adapter that's an all in one (for 3.5, 2.5, and SATA). Then you hook your failing drive up to the converter, put it in the usb port of another computer and then it will show up as another drive that you can open and explore.

The error code 4000-0146 basically refers to an issue with the HDD.However, the error is fixable. If you running on Windows XP, boot to the Recovery Console using the WinXP CD. Or the Windows Recovery Environment if you are using Windows Vista/Win7 and choose command prompt from the WinRE menu. Run chkdsk /r command in the recovery console or command prompt. The command will take approx 20 -90 mins depending on the errors and would finish with a log. Reboot your computer and see if you can boot through your OS normally.

that error actually refers to a hard drive issue/failure. You may attempt a reformat and reinstall, but if it fails, you can proceed to get a new hard disk. You can get in touch with Dell for warranty replacement if applicable, or order a new hard drive. You may then decide either to get the same capacity or upgrade to a higher capacity drive.
