Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Garage opener only opens with remote underneath the unit.

My garage opener used to work like normal but now it only works if the remote is underneath the unit or if the remote it touching the wire that is connected to the opener. Changed the battery on the remote and plugged opener into a different outlet, tried reprogramming also.

Here are some things to check. Some of this pertains to your problem and some doesn't.

Limited range of your remote controlscould be related to radio frequency interference that comes fromsomething in your home or in the surrounding environment. Certainelectrical devices can radiate interference; this could be almostanything that is plugged into an electrical outlet.

Please keep in mind that the device canbe brand new, or can be an item that has been in use for quite awhile. Also, the item may continue to function properly as far asyou are able to tell. The only problem with the item may be that ithas started to broadcast the interference, with no other symptomsnoted.

Some devices are more likely togenerate interference than others. This includes TV cable, cableamplifiers, surge protectors, fluorescent lights, battery chargingdevices (power tools, golf carts, etc.), anything that utilizes atimer (sprinkler systems, lights, alarm systems, etc.), and a myriadof others. If the problem seems sporadic, we can safely assume thatthe device responsible for the interference is only being operatedduring these times. Again, please keep in mind that the age of thedevice does not determine if it is capable of broadcasting unwantedinterference. Any electrical device can be the source of the problem.

The first step is replacing the batteryin your remote. If the range on your remote does not improve, removethe wall control wires from the overhead unit. If the range does notimprove you will likely need to replace the remote control. Afterreplacing the remote, or if you have other remotes programmed in tothe opener, and the range problem still exists, please proceed to thePower Down test.

Multiple garage doors:
If you have two garage door units andone is working just fine, you will need to start by unplugging thegood unit. This will help determine if the unit with no range startsto function properly. If the range comes back to the bad unit thenyou will need to replace the logic board on the unit that wasunplugged as it is emitting an RF signal that is over powering theother garage door opener. If the range does not improve after the“good” unit has been unplugged, replace the batteries and tryprogramming some additional remotes to determine if the existingremotes are the issue. If the extra remotes do not have any rangethen you would need to replace the receiver logic board in the “bad”unit.

Power Down test:
To isolate potential sources ofinterference, turn the circuit breaker off to the garage and plug thegarage door opener into an extension cord from another room. If therange improves, then the interference is coming from a device in thegarage. If no improvement is seen follow the same procedure, thistime turning off the circuit breakers to your home, with theexception of the garage and test the remote controls. If improvementis noted, turn the circuit breakers back on, one by one, until therange problem resurfaces. This will allow you to narrow down whatroom the problem device is in. You will have to go from there toisolate it further, by unplugging and re-plugging the items in thatroom.

If you are unable to determine anysource of interference, then the receiver logic board in the overheadunit will need to be replaced.

I bought a new Chamberlain garage door remote control (Model 953EV/EVC) but my garage door opener is date 1991. Can I get this remote to sync with it? I have one remote dated 1993 that came with the...

The 953EV/EVC remote is designed to work with garage door openers at 315MHz (more or less). Your older unit doesn't work at that frequency. I'm not positive but it could be 300MHz.

You need a retrofit unit to use the new remote. See https://aclickawayremotes.com/Liftmaster/355LM-2-315-Mhz-Garage-Door-Opener-Conversion-Kit/index.html for one that works with Chamberlain units.

I hope this helps.

Remote works only when Garage Door Opener light is OFF

I discovered that certain light bulbs interfere with the remote sensors. Harware stores have clear vibration reisistant bulbs for garage doors, try them instead. After spending money on a new remote, resetting remotes, and weeks of aggravation...poof.....i found it was the type of bulb I was using. Used a clear bulb and the problem went away. Hope this helps.

Garage door remote won't open the garage door

The little button with a padlock on the wall control is a "vacation" lockout feature that disables the remotes. There should be a small LED on the wall control that is always on steady. When the padlock button is pressed and released the LED should be constantly blinking (indicating the vacation lockout mode is active) and your remotes should be disabled. The wall control will still operate the door. Pushing the padlock button again should make the LED stop blinking and restore the door to normal operation.
