Many users face this same problem of GPS screen getting freezed.Mostly doing soft reset and hard reset solves the problem. But if the problem is same then there is a 30gb hard disk in the Lowrance LCX 28HD GPS that has to be checked. In some cases the connection of the hard disk gets loose or short internally causing the freezing problem.
Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

As I had called Cabella's for a price quote on new GPS...the advisor on products suggested that I try to install the latest version 2.5 update, which I had downloaded on computer. He thought that might solve the problem.

If in fact I try that, I'm thinking it will be obvious if the hard drive is faulty.

There is most likely a short in the unit. Could be humidity from the air, water intrusion, or small pests. It normally can't be repaired and you will have to replace it or send it in under the warranty.

Thanks for your comment. As the warranty has expired and the "bench" fee is like $400...thinking might be better to buy a "stand alone" unit for approx $600. At least...it will come with a 2 yr warranty.

Rather than do nothing or paying a hefty service fee. You could open the GPS and look for physical corrosion or damage to the internal components. Integrated components can't be fixed, but frayed wires and dirty contacts can. Also, while I don't know if this works for prolonged exposure to moisture. I know with recently soaked electronics you can get the heavy moisture out by blow drying the device for about 30 minutes and then draw the rest out by submerging the equipment in uncooked rice over-night. (Seriously) If you have a short caused by water trapped inside of integrated components this might fix it provided the components have not already been damaged by corrosion or electrical discharge and you would confirm that the device is no longer working because it is not properly sealing out moisture. Of course, even if this works, you would then need to find a way to re-seal the device again before using it on your boat, but that beats buying a new GPS.

Comes on white screen then off just for a second

If possible, try to restore the device to the newest firmware on it using your computer using this firmware:
http://www.lowrance.com/en/Products/Marine/Large-Screen-SonarGPS-Chartplotter-Combos/LCX-18C/Downloads/LCX-18C-Software-Update/

OR
Do a soft reset. This may resolve your issues and will also keep your data on the device.
Do a soft reset by:
1. Having the device already off
2. Press and hold the PAGES key
3. Press and hold the PWR key
4. Release both buttons when the USA map appears

If neither of those work, try a hard reset. This will however delete all stored data off your device.
To do a hard reset:
1. Have device off
2. Press and hold the ZIN&ZOUT Keys at the same time
3. Press and hold the PWR key
4. Release both buttons when the USA map appears

If none of these work, contact Lowrance at 1-800-628-4487

When turning on the Lowrance the depth indicator will only register 0.0 and continues flashing the number. The Lowrance is a LCX-17M. We tryed the Lowrance on another boat with a working transducer...

here is the link to your the lowrance web site. the trouble shooting guide says that if you tried to it on another boat than you might need to take it in for service. but there is a section that explains how to do a soft reset on the unit. you might try that.

Lowrance LCX 28c HD with Navionics HotMaps Premium SD chip. Chip worked fine last fall but when I went to use yesterday the Lowrance would not read the chip.

I had the same problem with my handheld Lowrance Hunt C. After installing the card and locking it in place, I had to slide the card "out" toward the locking mechanism. It barely moves, but worked after that. Whenever I load the card, I now slide it out or wiggle it and it works every time.

We have a X23 Lowrance. It was working OK then it just went to flashing 0.5m with bits of blue colour over the screen. We have switched it off and then on again, but still flashing 0.5m. Can you help?

First check and clean the transducer. Make sure it's level and clean of any dirt oil or fuel. You can do a hard or soft reset also but you'll lose all stored data and it will reset all of your settings. You can find out how to do a hard or soft reset on Lowrance hompage. www.lowrance.com I would get you the exact address but their web site is a little messed up this morning.

Lowrance LCX-19C GPS Receiver Problem

It sounds like you may have to send it out for service, but before you you do there are a few things you can try.

Low voltage can cause erratic behavior. Since you already wired directly to the battery, check the plug for corrosion.

Try unplugging the transducer cable to see if the display still behaves erratically. You wont see depth readings but you should still see the screen going black. If no erratic behavior with transducer unplugged then problem is in the transducer cable or the plug. A common source of failure is at the plug because the added stress of plugging and unplugging cables can cause the socket to twist slightly which can cause a short.

Make sure you have the latest software update.

How to see if your LCX-19C is already using version 1.8.0 software:
  1. Press the MENU button twice on your LCX-19C.
  2. Select SYSTEM SETUP.
  3. Select SOFTWARE INFORMATION.
  4. The software version for your unit is located under the line that says "LCX-19C" (ex. "Version 1.8.0").
  5. If your version is the same version listed above, there is no need to download the software.
If it is lower than 1.8.0 you can download the update from this link: LCX-19C UPDATE
Copy it onto a blank MMC card and install it in your GPS. The GPS should prompt you on how to install the update.

If you need to send the unit in for service click this link: LOWRANCE SERVICE

Good luck!
