Has been fixed with WD 40 and a small piece of thin card, pushing the Sd card further up into the contacts in the SD slot in camera. Husband is a genius.

First, make sure the switch on the card is not locked and that you are using an SD or an SDHC card in this camera. There are a few other type of SD cards that will work in these but the most common are SD and SDHC.
If the problem is not the card then you might need to have it repaired. Since you have a canon you can go to www.camerasandparts.com They do wonderful work and they are about half the cost of what canon wants to look at these.

Card locked

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here. If these don't help, and you do end up having to format your card, see the recovery software, along with the corrupted card procedures in this blog article.

That often happens as a result of a short on this model. Try emailing them at this site: www.camerasandparts.com They service the Canon Powershot cameras exclusively and they do excellent work, all for about half of what Canon wants. If you need help with it, that site is the place for a Powershot. They are excellent, send them an email and I'm sure they can help you with this problem. Good luck.

When I try to download photos from the Canon G7 to a Mac I get the "communications error" message.

Having gone two months without a response to my query, I assume my suggestion to use a card reader solved the problem.

My canon powershot g7 USB quit working, tried different cable and different computer

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Can't help with the camera- sounds like it has a fault.

The photos, however, should be recoverable by putting the memory card into a card reader on a computer.

Everytime I try to turn my camera on it keeps saying "Lens error, restart camera". And the lens only goes out part way. What could be wrong with my camera?

ıt seems to be your lens is blocked by internal moving parts that could have been damaged due to dropping or hitting it (either camera or just the lens ) to a hard surface.
I recommend you to take it to the nearest photo repair shop to a expert examination .If you are lucky, and if it is not a serious damage they may correct it easily.

First I know you've said you've checked the card's slide switch, but just want to restate this first for others with the same problem who may not know of this switch.

Check to make sure that you didn't accidentally place the tiny locking slide switch on the side of your SD card in the "locked" downward position. The correct "unlocked" position should be slid up toward the direction of the connectors.

If you've tried this, and it's still showing locked, it's likely that the locking switch inside the camera's card slot is stuck. If you look inside the slot on the side of the slot where the SD card slide switch would be, you'll see a glint of gold color on the side. This is the camera's lock/unlock switch. The other glint's of gold that you may see at the far end of the slot are the reader's connectors (ignore those).

Somehow, the locking switch is making contact and has become stuck in the locked position. With a plastic toothpick, or other skinny NON-METALLIC item, tap against this switch to see if you can jar open the contact to its normal unlocked position. Also try blowing compressed air at it, as some gunk may have worked its way in there, jamming it closed. Occasionally, reinsert the SD card to see if the issue has been corrected.

If repeated tries fail, it may be time to consider opening the camera to force open this switch (not recommended unless you have some familiarity with electronics). In this case please see the following (xscrewdriver, hope you don't mind me referencing your blog):

Photo card locked and can not take pictures.

There should be a tiny slide switch on the side of the card. Merely slide this switch to the other "unlocked" position.
