Question about Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines

Open Question

Good morning. My Rancilio "Nancy" is now nearing 20 years of in-home service and recently we took it apart, cleaned it, replaced the screen and gasket, and while doing it turned it on its side, When re-assembled it seemed to have difficulty pumping - like an air bubble occurred. That soon resolved but made us think it might need a new pump so contacted Olympia Washington parts seller and were told that the original pump (an NH5) was no longer made, but the replacement Ulka pump (an EX5) was "a direct replacement". They confirmed that the Nancy was 'absolutely' the right replacement. Upon receiving it, we now know the EX5 isn't a good match - different number of lead wires, not for this machine. But with a good handle on electronics, spectacles and ground and hot indicators obvious, he put it in, plugged it in and when he flipped the 'on' switch it immediately caused a dead short, with spark, smoke, and shooting the connecting wires across the room. A dangerous condition, and infuriating because of the assurances from seller of new pump. Husband took pump to shop and testing it, it's not harmed by the event. Still, we put the old pump back in and notified the seller. Now however the machine, with it's old pump sounds entirely different. Used to rumble and shake the very foundation with low rumble but now sounds like a electric buzz but works similarly to former noisier ********. Any ideas? Cellenoid? Different pump? Valve?

SOURCE: Francis Francis X1 Electrical Problem

i have the same problem with mine. just called service and they told me that the heating element is probably corroded and needs to be replaced. but it's big bucks - about $200 (100 for the part, 65 for them to open it up, and 20-30 for shipping it back to me)!

It could also be that the solenoid is of the wrong specifications, and hence not getting up to pressure.. Have them check both the temp and pressure cutouts again..

SOURCE: Rancilio Silvia leaks around group head. Gasket seems fine.

HI
You need to change the group head gasket. They only last about 1 year and then should be changed. Get 2 because they usually fail on Friday and you have a party on Saturday.
The gaskets get hard from the heat and don't form to the filter any more so they leak.
When you get the new gasket.
Empty everything out of the machine (water tank, drip tray, etc.) Turn the machine upside down on a towel. This way you can see what your are doing.
Remove the filter screen and diffuser from the brew head. The black O-ring is your gasket. Carefully pry it out. Clean the opening good before you install the new gasket. Insert the gasket with the beveled side down (on the inside edge of the O-ring is the bevel). Once you have the gasket in place, use the portafilter to finish seating the gasket.

XPS 410 won't boot but CPU fan spins

A loud CPU fan will also equate with overheating and imminent failure. Can you reliably access your system BIOS? Can you run a memory test there? If so your CPU is functional (and your memory which is also subject to overheating and BSOD under XP. If those are good your prime suspect is your HDD. If you can afford it, now would be a good time to replace your system.

The motor burned out after one year of use. It was bought in Oct 2009. This year in Oct. it burned up in about 10 min. How can I get a replacement motor? I took it apart, cleaned it, reassembled it...

I would recommend contacting the manufacturer. The warranty was 1 year. If you are at 13 -14 months, I would ask Flowtron for some help in getting it replaced. Sometimes manufacturers are willing to split the cost of a repair that is near the warrany end to help keep a customer satisfied. It is worth trying.
Good luck.

Rancilio Silva - coffee lost its punch

Try backwashing the group with purocaff.
Are you using coffee ground at the store or do you grind just before use?
How fresh is the coffee less than a month or more?
If more than a month(whole beans) it is no longer useful.
If more than a 3 days(ground), that is stale also. It will be very diffucult to get good espresso from that(not impossible, but difficult).

If using store ground, it cannot be ground older than a week(coffee loses flavor and taste minutes after being ground). Try getting less coffee more often and adjust the grind setting that you use. If you have always used setting 3 on the store grinder try 2.5.
If grinding at home adjust the settings on the grinder to a slightly coarser grind and fill the portafilter slightly over the top of the basket, now tamp to the indent(fill line) in the basket. that should be sufficient to pull a great shot.

Dryer runs but no air circulating

love2fix,

First use the dryers service mode and make sure that you are getting the same information as you suspect:

It's called "Field Service Mode"
1. Press the POWER key to turn the dryer on.
2. Press HELP. The main help screen is displayed.
3. Press and hold MY CYCLES and BACK simultaneously for 3 seconds. Press EXIT to return to the HOME screen.

There's a 95% chance that it is your blower and your dryer should confirm that.

I just recently replaced the blower in my GE Profile Harmony as well. While I had my dryer apart, I also cleaned the heck out of it. Excellent opportunity to take your vaccum cleaner and get all of those dust bunnies out!

I purchased the blower from www.applicancepartpros.com for about $146 S&H included.

Best of luck!

there are two class of expresso coffée: one produce crema and the other none. A 9 sec shot, means you are putting ground coffee that are way too coarse. The Silvia requires coffee grounf extremely fine, near powder texture.
Hope this help
