I repair these units for a living. The tamper if it's an 870 or greater is either a security pill, ped fence, battery. You need a volt tester because more then likely it's the battery. If it's an older unit there is a 90% chance it's the battery.
If it's the battery you need a SGun and a new battery. They are very easy to work on. To clear a tamper once the battery has been installed you will have to do a hard re-set, take a small pen or needle and hold the reset button on the top right corner down 3-13 times. I repair 18 of these in 8 hours and I always wait for it to blink 13 times before letting off the reset button.
If you do this the unit will need a reload of your software, that's a whole other ballgame if you have custom software on it. When you hard reset a unit your basically stuck with RF 15-16-17 and whatever service pack is currently on the system.

Verifone has a built in safe-guard against tampering. There are certain things that can cause the new Vx Series of terminals to display this error - from someone actually tampering with the terminal, to a physical drop or jarring of the terminal.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the ONLY way for a terminal to be unlocked when displaying "Tamper" is to send it into an authorized service center. I have many of these devices in the field for customers and have dealt with this issue a few times - unfortunately, that's the only way Verifone set it up for this error to be resolved.
Sorry for the bad news, but hope it helped!

Yes your assumptions are correct. The unit does not store the customer information as that will be illegal and amount to fraudulent activities. Also it is highly secured so the merchant ID is completely inaccessible.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

you to be able to reset the the unit, you need to install or replace
the MSAMs where all previous information is stored. Here are additional
steps that you may apply to reset the unit.
1 Remove the power cord and/or battery (see Smart Battery) from the terminal.
2 Place the terminal upside down on a soft, clean surface to protect the lens
3 Remove the MSAM compartment door screw and rotate the door up and back
to access the MSAM cardholders
4 Remove any previously installed MSAM card by sliding the card from the
5 Install an MSAM card by aligning the card and carefully sliding it within the
guides on the cover until it is fully inserted
you will find all info in those two manuals..even the factory code used in resetting mode...if it is not changed..it will be 998877
