Question about GPS

1 Answer

Hi, My Garmin GPS 12 will not power on ... regardless of whether I use batteries or the AC adapter that sends juice into its interface port. This suggests to me that a circuit that gets power into the Garmin from ANY power source is broken... or maybe a bad contact for the "on/off" button?? I'm wondering if I can have a diagram of the wiring schematics so that I might pop this thing open and try to remedy the broken circuit? billbelzer@hotmail.com

Hello there:
You can request a diagram from garmin and i think they even have a downloadable pdf formatted diagram you will just have to contact them to be sure then if so find your model number Also normally what happens on these units that quit is that their is a small fuse in the inside of these units that blow out so if you think you can open it up and see if the fuse is indeed blown then all you will have to do is to replace it ok
now if it is still under warranty you can send it back to garmin or have a local authorized make the repairs for you under the warranty ok
I hope this is very helpful for you
Best regards Michael

My Garmin 2597 freezes when I plug in the supplied Garmin 12 v ac adaptor , the only way I can charge the unit is with a battery bank

The ac adapter may be defective. Try another ac adapter that will fit into the Garmin. If the problem does not duplicate, then replace the Garmin adapter.

My Garmin will not stay on. It starts to come on then shuts off.

Hi Paulette,

Many Garmin GPS units that only get powered by the car charger / cradle suffer from this problem eventually. The fix is pretty simple. You didn't include your model GPS, but I think this may help just the same:

Connect the GPS to a computer's USB port, or AC adapter that has a USB port and leave on for 8 hours (or over night). Disconnect and and turn on again. If you have a Nuvi that has a spring return sliding power switch - slide and hold it in the on position for 15 seconds before letting go. It should power up just fine. You do not need to hold the power switch like this again to turn it on.

If the GPS starts acting like this again, simply repeat the process as often as needed. Eventually, the internal battery will no longer be able to accept a charge and will require replacement.

Good luck!

Garmin 1260T blankscreen?

Try pressing and HOLDING the power button for up to 15 seconds (or until it powers up - whichever happens first). This is a "hard reset" and should get you going unless the battery is discharged.

Oddly, batteries can discharge when the GPS remains on the car charger. Disconnect it and connect to the your computer's USB port (or AC adapter if it came with one) over night. The computer must be ON - "sleeping" is ok too - just not "OFF". This will charge the internal battery.

If it will not accept a charge, you may need to replace the battery or return the GPS to Garmin for service.

The limited directions tell me to charge my Garmin 1450 for at least 4 hours. How is that done without a charger? Will it charge with the computer cable? It seems that your site will not allow me to...

Hello,

The nuvi will accept a charge when connected to a computer if the computer connection is done through a powered USB port.
Garmin part number 010-10723-00 which is an AC power adapter is also available for charging the unit.

How do I recharge the battery on my Garmin Nuvi 255WT? I would also like to know how to update my Garmin?

Hello,

Recharging the battery is done by connecting the nuvi to a vehicle power cable in the car through the vehicle power accessory outlet or cigarette lighter.
The unit can also be charged via a powered USB port off your computer via the USB power/data cable or an AC power adapter through the USB power/data cable.

My gps will not charge anymore. My car outlet works with other devices but not my gps unit

Many Garmin units develop this problem if they never connect to an AC adapter (some Garmin's included an AC adapter in the box - not so much anymore though) or to a computer's USB port.

Try connecting to either over night and see if the problem is resolved. Garmin also identified a problem with batteries that were failing prematurely. The models involved were certain serial numbers of the following models:

nüvi 200W, 250W, & 260W
nüvi 7xx (where xx is a two-digit number)

If you have one of the models listed above, you can check to see if it has one of the defective batteries by entering your serial number on this page.

You didn't include a manufacturer or model number - so the above may not apply to you - however - regardless of brand or model, no battery will last forever. Exposure to extremes in temperatures and humidity all work to shorten the life of ANY battery. Yours may have reached that point. You may be able to replace the battery on your own - or have to send it to the manufacturer for replacement.

CHARGING MY GARMAN GPE C330. DO I LEAVE THE GARMAN ON OR OFF WHEN CHARGING . THE BATTERY WAS DEAD ON MY WAY BACK FROM MY LAST TRIP.IT WAS OK GOING UP I HAD IT PLUGGED IN TO CIG LIGHTER BUT GARMAN SEND...

Disconnect from cigar lighter and connect to the USB port of your computer or any AC adapter over night. By morning the battery will have recharged and be ready for use. This seems to happen with the GPS is left connected to a vehicle's cigar lighter for an extended period of time. You can do this USB / AC adapter recharge procedure as often as needed.

I hope this helps!

My Garmin 765t won't power on. Anything I can do

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of easy user troubleshooting for Garmin units. I will note that the AC adapter that plugs in the USB port will give the unit more power than a USB connection to a computer or the 12vDC car adapter. If you've tried connecting it to the AC adapter and it still won't come on, it is possible the internal battery has gone bad and is consuming more power than the supply can produce to both charge and power up the unit. You can try leaving it plugged into the AC adapter for an hour or so and then trying to power it up with the AC adapter plugged in.

Let me know what you've done so far to troubleshoot and I'll research some more for you.

Garmin 1412, wont run on battery power, DC only. Need info on maybe a full reset whether to return as defective

I found there are select 120v AC adapters that will work on Magellan GPS. When a working 120v or 12v adapter to mini USB adapter is plugged into the unit, the battery bars will be 'scrolling' and therefore charging.

When your adapter, or even USB cable from your computer, is plugged into the GPS unit, and the battery goes to FULL, it is NOT CHARGING. The battery bars must be SCROLLING for the unit to charge. In this case, get a different adapter until it works.
